Is this a typical transmission failure mode?

Wow well when you got hook-ups I am sure... out here shops charge $150-200 an hour.... I would spend at least $500 to have a trans put in..

At those rates, $2300 isn't bad then assuming it is a quality product and they stand behind it.

Yep that is what Jesse and I are referring to... if you do it yourself sure you can get away with about $500 for a used transmission with low miles and your own labor... $2300 isn't bad for an installed transmission with a warranty. Granted it all depends on how good the shop is though :D

Lonnie sells an upgraded tranny for $1200. Shipping is $300, and I have an expert tranny guy who charges $250 for the install.

$1750 for a better tranny, installed, with one year warranty.

But how does the warranty work if you are on the other side of the country? The shop that installs the tranny is not the place with the warranty?

Exactly!

You spend 1750 and say something goes wrong... then you have to pay the guy another $250 to take it out another $300 to ship it etc.

Even the best guys make mistakes sometimes...

Seriously guys what is your deal?

I can install my trans for FREE....I can get a trans built for FREE....I can buy a master rebuild kit for 225 bucks.....so should I say $2300 is WAY TOO EXPENSIVE? No.

At any shop, $2300 is a pretty good deal considering the warranty is IN HOUSE, its probably more than a 1 year, and if he has ANY issues with leaking etc. he just brings it in.....hence the reason he paid $2300.

Our shop would charge $1800-$2200 for a full rebuild AND a new converter, so 100 bucks more is still a good deal.

Just like Max said....doesn't matter who is building it, you bring your OWN PARTS into a shop, they will NOT warranty them. You're paying 5hrs labor for R&R at $80/hr(400 bucks) all over again....plus shipping on top of that, than, if it fails AGAIN, thats another 400+ bucks. I've seen it happen several times when customers prefer we install a USED transmission instead of build theirs.

So...now that you guys have disected my comment and made this entire thread pointless...the poor guy is thinking, "Man, I wish I knew how to work on cars, and had all the hook-ups these guys do."

Mah.

I'm sure you can rebuild your own with a master re-build kit but there are those out there who know the 4R70W and how to make them stronger and more reliable than any stock rebuild.

My 'hookup' is over 200 miles away but I would not hesitate at all having the car towed/hauled there if need be to get what I know is better than any of the local choices available to me.

A master rebuild kit has NOTHING to do with ANYTHING that makes the transmission "stronger" or more "reliable". When you upgrade the trans, you upgrade the "hard parts" which are an add on to the master kit.

The master kit includes all the seals/bushings/clutches/band/o-rings/gaskets/valve body kit and all that little crap. This would be your basic rebuild if none of the hard parts are bad. Most 4R70W's will need to be "upgraded" because of the wear on the drums/sun shell/planetary gears because they weren't built very well from the factory. My price (2200) includes all these "upgrades" or necessary parts that will make it last so when he says he paid 2300 out the door is pretty good. Basically, I wanted to let him know that he WASN'T RIPPED OFF.....but that was taken WAY out of context by you guys.....

Everyone has a "buddy" or a "hook-up", but there are also those people that have to pay "normal" prices because they don't have buddies in the profession. I have hook-ups in almost EVERY automotive field, but lets say I wanted to buy an airplane.....I'm screwed! Haha.

I paid $1750 out the door with no buddies or preferred pricing. $400 for install is too much.

Just my opinion, but he could have gotten a better tranny at a better price.

Than you got a screaming deal. $400 is $80/hr labor rate at the book time of 5hrs....what more do you want? You could take it to the dealer and pay $140/hr and it would be more, but there are always shops that charge less or more...just because you got a decent deal, doesn't mean this guy got ripped off.

Labor rates are highly geographical. Around here the dealer shop rates are $65-$75 per hour, most others around $50-$60. Smaller private shops can be as low as $35 per hour.

That's cheap in comparison to most other locales.

For sure.....

Maybe he got completely ripped off because he lives in the boondocks where there is only one transmission shop? Either way...IMO its a good deal.
