Does anybody have any suggestions on where to purchase a long block 4.6L DOHC? I'm not really interested in playing Russian Roulette at the junk yards -- sorry -- auto recyclers.

I'm starting to hear a knock when I start HOTLNC. The oil report last time showed bearing material in the oil....

Why not just rebuild your block before it gets too bad?

As a general rule of thumb, a rebuild on a 4.6L DOHC is not feasibly done under $3K without cutting corners or doing your own labor. The least I've seen is $3500 with minimal new parts/machining required. Even high volume Jasper rebuilds cost more than that.

FLM may not be a bad option either. Our local FLM service rep leaves brochures all the time for Ford remans - usually late model stuff including Powerstrokes and transmissions. I don't recall seeing a quote for an early 4.6L DOHC listed however.

i have a whole complete running motor from a 97 mark VIII that was in a gorgeous car, runs perfect, no leaks, no smoke, no noise its a perfect drop in motor. it does have 120k on it but the car was elderly owned and obviously was well cared for. every part of this car was spotless. i bought the car to part out because thats what i do if they are nice or junk it doesnt matter to me, this is one of the quietest motors i have offered for sale and a very smooth runner. i drove this car over 40 miles to get it to my shop and i tried to sell the car complete before i tore it apart because of its condition, but trying to sell it wasnt paying my bills so i parted it. i would like $800 for it and i can ship it anywhere in the us. people on here know me well. i have been helping the mark VIII community for over 7 years so trust is not an issue. we have over 2,300 positive feedbacks on ebay. its a thought, you want a motor, and i want to sell one!
here is a link to the motor.

this is the car it came from, you can see how nice the car was.

That's a pretty good price from SCP. If you want new, that's the ticket.

It all depends what you want out of it. I would pick up a low mileage 30-40k motor for cheap and swap that in.
But if you're paying for labor and what not, then it will still be expensive.

I don't have the tools or the time or the balls to attempt my own rebuild. I've done three RX7 motors, all short blocks. All the parts in one of these things worry me.

Yeah, SCP has a real good price. I'll check my local FLM dealer and see what they can also.

Since I have a lift, I could do a through the bottom install.

Thanks for the offer. But I'm going to go to a rebuild instead of a used motor.

Jerry how many miles are on that Mark VIII?

With the amount of money you're about to spend on it... wouldn't it make more sense to pick up a lower mileage Mark and send HOTLNC to the scrapper?

I'm pushing 240K on HOTLNC.

HOTLNC is not on its deathbed just yet. The oil work is showing signs of bearing material and I THINK I hear knocking when it starts. But I can't hear it every time I start it.

We can't do another car payment until Cream Puff is paid off -- this is gonna take 13 months. HOTLNC may last that long before I am forced to put it down.

According to my local, friendly FLM dealer, it's gonna could cost almost $6900 if they install a Ford long block themselves. $1900 of that is labor. I can purchase a long block from our buddies in Ohio (has any body done so?) for under 2300, including shipping. In theory, I can hand my friendly FLM dealer the long block and $1900 and they will install it. That will save 2700 bucks, but the labor ain't under warranty.

If the car blows within the next few months, I will more than likely do it myself.

If it blows tomorrow, I'll let my friendly FLM dealer do it with my motor.

If it lasts until next year at this time, I'm thinking I'll put it down and start looking for a sporty RWD replacement. I'm gonna try my best for American Made.

Just pick up a V8 T bird... you can have a nice one for the price you're willing to pay for your engine alone.
