4R70W Swap

Hey Folks,

Have a 95 1st Gen Mark VIII. Will be installing a 96 Mark tranny this Sat. I seem to remember reading something about having to swap some part to make it fit (sensor module?). Can anyone give me any tips on this?

I also need to know fuse sizes (by the numbers) for same car. I currently must disconnect battery cable so alarm doesn't ring and feel it is a fuse problem.

Car has been off the road for 3 years. How I wish money grew on trees!

Thanks for any help.

I swapped my 95 for a 97 out of an F-150, and didn't swap any parts except for the speedo gear. (The F-150 had 3:55's) Has worked fine with no problems.

Welcome!

You will need the transmission wiring harness from your 95. The 96 harness won't work on your car. It's a rare harness so if the 96 has one, don't throw it away.

I think you will also need the TCC solenoid from your 95 transmission. I don't think that you will need to re pin the harness, but I'm not sure about the 96. I'm not sure about the speed sensor either, hopefully, someone else with more knowledge about the 96 will chime in here.

Looking at the EVTM, it appears the transmission control harness connector C163 is the same and has the same internal connections to the solenoids/sensors. It appears the MLPS connector is different.

Good, he won't have to re pin the connector, just use the MLPS from the 95 trans.

Also, since the 95 and 96 were both available as LSC or base models, the transmissions might have different speedometer gears. Another easy swap if needed.

Good catch. It's a lot easier to do before it's in place in the car.

The tailshaft speed sensor harness connector is the same '95 vs. '96, but the harness wiring for it is different since the '96 is OBD-II vs. the '95 EEC-IV.

This may help. If you're saying the alarm goes off for no reason, try unplugging the hood switch over on the passenger side fender wall.
