Funny Ticking noise and feel in the top end of the engine. I think its the alternator but not sure. Is this a common problem. I have no idea what it is. When it started it was just everynow and then. Its there all the time now. could there be a bearing going bad in the alternator. Thanks in advance.

What year is your Mark VIII? How many miles are on it?

Also any other problems like reduced performance etc?

Some 95s tend to lose valve springs.... which creates nasty ticking noises.

Does the car idle rough? Is this loss of power under load?

If so I would check all the coil boots and make sure they are doing well...

Does the belt show any signs of wear?

If you are uncertain that the noise is coming from the alternator I would suggest getting a stethoscope... and trying to zero in on it.

It doesnt sound like like a valve tapping its sounds more like a tiny compresor running thats what I thought it was at first. I later discoved that it was not the compressor. I have no idea what it could be.

When I feel the vibration on both valve covers it not bad. When I lay my hand on top of the alternator it feels like it is right there. The belt does make some noise in the morning but thats about it. The belt does need replaced I know that for sure.

With the engine cold, I'd take off the serpentine belt and start the car. Just run it long enough to listen to it to see if you can hear the noise. If you don't hear the noise anymore, shut it off and check all the pulleys and accessories while the belt is off.
