98' 90,000 Miles So on my way to work today I pass my dad having some good old fun. When we get to work he informs me that there is black smoke when I really get the RPMS up. He says its not gray that its black. Any ideas

Stock PCM tuning is very very RICH on the top end.

Looking at my stock calibration the commanded AF at 5000 and WOT is something stupid like a 9.8/10.0 AF ratio.

which is fat enough to cover a 100 shot of Nitrous or would be a "commanded AF" for a supercharged car.

Black Smoke = too much fuel.

A custom programed chip eliminates a BUTTLOAD of the extra fuel that Lincoln chose to throw into the motor at high RPMs.

Yea Tommy is right, the car runs very rich.

I would check to make sure all maintenance is up to date...

How old are the plugs?

Ever change any O2 sensors?

Good point, all the regular stuff applies foremost.

old plugs and old 02's will definately contribute to the black stuff

Remove two bolts on plug cover...remove 4 COP's on each side, get spark plug socket and twist counterclockwise.

The plugs are under the coil/plug covers, two 10 mm bolts. You will need to remove the air inlet tube on the passanger side. Be carfull when removing the plug boots, pull stright up, or the ruber can crack. Check or change the air filter, plugs first, also you can check the coils and coil boots.

how do I get to the plugs to check them and where can I get a chip

Plugs are easy two bolts hold the cover on top of each side of the motor. I would inspect the boots and would probably change them all (If they have not been already) while you are there.

I don't have a chip, but everything I read around here says Call Lonnie at Blue Oval Chips, See the vendor section.

WOW! lets all answer at once. LOL

You can also call Torrie at the Fast Parts Network, he has the Mark VIII tune down, I have his chip in my 98 LSC and it's a huge difference.

Thanks Guys saved the day. So I have no plug wires correct. How much does one of these chips cost. Does anyone know how to fix the rear neon brake light while we are all here.
