Problem with '98, not firing on all 8 :(

Hey guys, have a problem with my wifes '98. She heard a "pop" or light "bang" of some sort and then the car starting running like crap. She drove it home and it sounds like the motor has a bad miss from the passenger side. At idle you will hear a pop pop pop. This car only has a bit more than 20k miles, any idea where the problem lies?. I need to get a scanner and get codes but I just want to know if anyone else had a similar problem and how they fixed it. Off hand I'm thinking some sensor, plug wire popped loose or ?????. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Sounds like you may have popped a spark plug out?! Check that first...
98 have no plug wires...

If it is knocking you may have lost a valve... you should stop driving the car either way and operate it as little as possible to avoid further engine damage.

Crap, I forgot it doesn't have plug wires, there is no knocking; besides the obvious miss the motor sounds great. Is it possible to pop a spark plug out????. I've many cars and if that is the case, this will be a first. Hopefully I have some time to check it out tomorrow.

Very possible and relatively common on the Mark VIII... but usually on higher mileage cars that have had their plugs overtorqued etc...

I would check the obvious first like coils, and coil boots... it really takes about 10-15min to inspect them yourself.

nick, its not uncommon for a mark VIII to spit a plug out of the head, specially if they have been changed and not tightend properly, dont forget the heads are aluminum and the threads of the spark plug holes can get wiped out easily. you could have a coil pack that crapped out too. a misfiring 4.6 will give a slight popping sound, usually it can be heard through the air intake box. first thing i would do, it unbolt the coil covers on the valve covers and lift the coil packs out and see if any of them come out with a spark plug stuck in the boot, if one does, you got some problems and will have to have the plug hole rethreaded with a heli-coil or other methods. if the plugs are all good and tight, get the car on a scanner and see if you have a bad coil pack, or other problems. it may only have 20k on it, but its still 9 years old!

Bad boot was the problem on cylinder #7. Gonna do all the boots now to make sure this doesn't happen again. All spark plugs were nice and tight!.

lol Jamie your post was almost a copy of mine lol!

Those boots are nice and cheap at $2 a pop or so... might as well do all... they are crappy design so I would keep spares.

Nice and cheap?????. I paid $88 for them!. Regardless, the car now runs better than ever, put Bosch Platinum plugs in it and of course the new boots (they were all pretty bad). C/E light sill stays on though, how do I get rid of that?.

BTW: How are things going Jamie?. Sell your car yet? Got the lawn business going?

an 88 dollar repair on any mark VIII is a blessing dude, be happy, you could need a blend door, or front end rebuild.
hows things going? they suck, same as always, still have my car, i'm keeping it, and no i didnt start the lawn care, my car was going to start that, but i dont want to sell it, i love the car and it took alot of sweat and tears to get it, it took alot for me to get the car i wanted so to get rid of it now would be stupid.

and just my opinion, but platinum plugs suck, i use autolite copper 764's. i never liked platinum plugs, i think people use them because they have a huge myth behind them of being the best thing since sliced bread!!

unhook the battery for 10 minutes to get rid of the check engine light.

Platinum plugs are great... they are OEM equipment and last 100k miles... copper is a better conductor but doesn't last nearly as long.

The OEM platinums in my crown vic were still ok at 100k miles which is when I changed them... now at 56k miles there is still plenty of life left on them... I don't like changing plugs on these cars because of the very few threads on the plugs...

$88 is a bit much for just the boots... but as long as it is fixed it is all good.

I too have been using plats in my Mark VIII. They've been in since I replaced them right after I purchased the car....something like 40K miles now...and I got the best fuel milage ever yesterday coming back from upstate NY. Fueled up in Bennington, VT yesterday AM, got back home about 4PM...approx 400 miles, averaged 27.5 MPG according to the lie-o-meter. Will refill it today or tomorrow and recheck manually. Oh yeah, regular gas...ALWAYS!

Glad you found the problem, but I would find a new parts dealer. mine only cost $20 for all eight. I only need four so I have some spares.

Oh yeah, regular gas...ALWAYS!

Ive done two test now, One month(about 2k miles) each. running premium (91) and then running regular (87).

I dont really notice any preformance difference, but I dont race it.

Mileage is slightly lower in both test 21.2 to 20.9. I figure thats about 1/2 gal.@ 3.20=1.60 per thank.

Reg. is about .15 less than prem. 17x.15=2.55-1.60=.95 per tank savings.

I placed this order on 10/7/2007. Time for a tune-up. The Autolite 103 copper plugs are not OEM-specified, but I'm going to give them a try. They are one step colder that the Autolite 764 plugs. Let's call it an owner preference so as to not start a debate.

Wow, I never saw mileage like that out of the '95 (sold) or my wifes '98. Hell If she makes it to 240 miles per tank I'm impressed but it is all city driving. So the car runs good on regular?. I only used super unleaded on my '95 and the wifes '98 but am open to the idea of using regular if performance is not affected.

You are getting for milage what we usually get for city driving. Yours too will get much better on a trip. When I questioned my Lincoln dealer where we bought the car, he said they had used it for 2 years as a car for the used car department to pick up customers and auction cars they had bought. 2 drivers one way, two cars coming back and they ALWAYS used nothing but regular gas. That was good enough for me..... I tried using hi-test for about a year and nothing really changed - except my gas bills when up.
