5 W 20 is called for from the factory. These engines stay together very well, and I hartily suggest that you dont go heavier that 5 W 30 at the most. Even that is more than needed. In my 97, I used 5 W 20 and Prolong, and it had 148,000 on it when I sold it to my grandaughter. It still doesnt use any between 5000-7500 mi interval changes. Not to put your mechanic down, but he doesnt know sickem about these engines.
