I thinking of switching to a synthetic oil I have a friend who is a mechanic he suggested mobil 1 5w 40 I interested in what some of you guys use 123k on my car

5 W 20 is called for from the factory. These engines stay together very well, and I hartily suggest that you dont go heavier that 5 W 30 at the most. Even that is more than needed. In my 97, I used 5 W 20 and Prolong, and it had 148,000 on it when I sold it to my grandaughter. It still doesnt use any between 5000-7500 mi interval changes. Not to put your mechanic down, but he doesnt know sickem about these engines.

If you go to Advance they are having a sale on MOBILE 1. Packadge deal where you get 5 Qts and a filter for $30. I know we need 6 Qts, but it is still a good deal as the Mobil 1 filter is one of the best in the busines so it's like free. The reason for the higher viscosity oil (lower #) is impart due to the tighter clearances our engines are machined to. To each his own, but there would be no way a 40 weight oil (even a 5W40) would be in any of my marks. Over stressing the internals is a baaaaaddd thing!!!

Auto Zone is/was having a sale...5 qts of castrol 5W30 and a filter for $14...now they have Valvoline & fram filter for $13

FWIW, I use Castrol Syntec 5W30 with a K&N oil filter at intervals suggested by the message center.

If your car doesn't burn oil use 5w-20, I have Amsoil 0w-20 in both the Mark VIII's right now and the MPG on the freeway is a bit better and this oil is less drag on the engine.
