How much work is involved in adding CD player/changer to 01 Conti?

Hi,

I just purchased a 2001 Continental with center console and Alpine radio/cassette. Unfortunately, it does not have CD player/changer. Do you guys know how much work is involved in adding one and cost of required cables, etc?

MP3 player with cassette adapter is out of the question here so it has to be CD player. I guess if installing changer is big $$$, I can settle with portable CD player.

Thanks,
drabina

Dont have a 01 conti but have a 97...if its a regular DIN its a snap to do it your self...just run the cabling under the carpet along the door and to the trunk...you can usually get a specisl cable to attach it to the radio...Why is cassette outta the question? Had an 05 Acura with tape/cd and my conti and i've always just plugged my ipod into that.....but yeah anyway its easy and dirt cheap if you do the work yourself!

fm transmitter quality is horrible..and depending on how close you are to a station you have to change frequencies

Nice system. Unfortunately, I think this costs more than $250 CD changer from Crutchfield :) I was actually thinking of a cheaper solution ($100 CD changer from Ebay + some wiring).

I live close to NYC and I have used once FM transmitter for iPod. Well, I should say that I have tried to use one. I was unable to find open frequency and the background noise was terrible. I gave up. Crutchfield has universal CD changers based on FM transmitter technology. They replied to my inquiry that the universal systems should work better than my iPod transmitter, because they are connected directly to an antenna. I might give it a try though the replacement CD changer for my car is only $100 than universal one. Still more than I would like to invest.

From the other replies it looks like removing dash, console and maybe some carpeting is involved with adding CD changer. I guess I will opt for a simpler solution like portable CD player with cassette adapter. Small mess of wires out in the open but saves me a lot of work and $$$.

Thanks to all who replied.

Honestly.....I replaced my stock changer with a Sony Xplode and it took all of an hour to hook up the power/ground to the old harness, and run the FM modulator wire up to the back of the radio. Very easy, regardless if you had a changer already or not. The 10 disk Sony I bought was only 150 bucks too.
