I have a 94 Mark and i am getting 8.5 mpg. I pulled the codes and they are 172, #1 cat bank lean, 176 #2 cat bank lean, and 524 and 543 which I have read up on in other post. they say the o2's can cause these codes. can bad o2's cause my fuel economy to be this low? new to lincolns i have always been a chevy guy. but after years of helping Jeff (sierra3) i broke down and had to get one. thanks in advance.

Yes, bad o2 towards the front of the car can cause you MPG problems. They are used to help the computer determine the air fuel ratios in any modern car.

Thanks I will look into that. Hopefully that will Clear my codes mentioned above. and improvew my fuel economy i am only getting about 120mile to a tank

8.5 MPG???? IS this going thru a full tank of gas (high test?) and doing the math? Milage devided by the gallons? Or is this using the Lie-o-meter for instant MPG? You HAVE to go through a full tank with some (half)highway miles in there to get an average for a full tank. If you are only getting 8.5, you have some BIG problems or are doing burnouts ALL the time. Try keeping your foot out of it for a tank and see what happens....

I use simple math. and i only drive 2.5 miles to work tend to baby it most of the time unless i feel a little froggy. but not that often. it did not take me long to realize the display was way off. yes it is also high test gas

When I drove my mark 2 miles to work i'd get 10mpg... but i would warm up the car a bit as well..

Cold starting and driving short distances where the car never really gets up to full operating puts the most wear on a car. Also I think when the car is cold it will run a bit on the rich side and net you les MPG. Ideling to warm it up will get you les MPG as well since you are at the time getting 0 mpg.

If you are going to go on a long highway ride you can reset the MPG, turn on the cruse control under 70 mph and you should get over 20 MPG with no problem if every thing is tuned right.

yea on flat grounds at 70mph you should be at 25-28mpg if everything is working right... everything else is speculation.

Hi,
I know its been a while, But on my Expedition 5.4 I also received similiar codes, and it was NOT O2's. It was the coolant temp sensor . It only showed bad while during a running test with a live data OBDII scanner. It commonly goes bad and while telling the ECM its current temp, it drops to like -32 deg. once every 5-10 sec. just for a sec. This however is enough to make you computer think the engine is suddenly cold, and shoot more gas into the cylinders.
