Is there a page somewhere that describes how to change out the rear dif?

I did a quick search, but didn't find anything...

Thanks,

:D -J

come on... really there isn't any help page for this?

or maybe a thread that might have some in site?

thanks! :D -J

I can tell you how to change out the pumpkin... but the gears on the inside is a whole different story.

Get the pumpkin off you need to lower the brackets that hold the gas tank... disconnect the driveshaft... get the half shafts out.... and in order to do that you will need to undo the rear upper control arms to swing the spindle out.

I do not recall a "how to" page.

From memory it goes generally like this:

  • Raise and support rear of car.
  • Lower or remove exhaust from differential area.
  • Remove wheel.
  • Remove axle nut(use new one to replace).
  • Remove ABS sensors from side of differential case.
  • Release spring retainer on parking brake adjuster.
  • Remove park brake cable.
  • Remove brake caliper.
  • Tie brake caliper out of way not suspended from brake hose.
  • Remove caliper bracket and rotor.
  • Match-mark control arm bushings with paint marker.
  • Remove upper control arm bolt.
  • Tie upper control arm up out of way.
  • Remove lower control arm bolts.
  • Remove hub from end of halfshaft - support halfshaft.
  • Pry halfshaft out of differential.
  • Match-mark pinion flange of driveshaft at differential.
  • Unbolt driveshaft at pinion flange.
  • Support differential with floorjack or transmission jack.
  • Remove two front bolts from differential.
  • Remove rear bolts from differential rear mount.
  • Lower differential while simultaneously separating other halfshaft.
  • Lower differential and slide off remaining halfshaft.

Tada!

"Assembly is in the reverse order." :D

If you wish, I can try to get the procedure from the manual this weekend.

What year, the 98? I can print the pages to a PDF file from the DVD and e-mail it to you, send me your e-mail as well since i never see you on AIM anymore.

Thank you JP and Steve...

the car is at the mechanic, so we'll see if he wants to tackle the project or not... he says that he owns a 95, so I'm hoping we can bond over MK8s and maybe a few beers, we'll see... I dropped the car off, but have yet to actually meet him.

I'll keep you posted, if nothing else, Saxmobile #5 will have new brakes and brake lines, so that will be nice...

You know, it's funny, I had to drive the car over today (with basically no brakes) and it was about 28 outside, and I almost couldn't get the car started... and I had a moment where I thought to myself, oh yes... this is why I bought that Caddy... cause it will run when the temp is below freezing...

BTW, maybe taking delivery of Saxmobile #7 on Sat, so keep your fingers crossed for me... I didn't get a chance to drive it since it was sitting dead center in the showroom (there going to have to move at least 6 cars to get it outside) but it was black/black with a big red bow on the roof... merry xmass to me... :D

Thanks! :D -J
