1 - 2 Shift

As most of you know I recently put in a Jasper Transmission in my 93 Lincoln mark. The old transmission had no 3rd or 4th gear.

Well the installation went well thanks to a lot of you here that helped me. Now im noticing a 1 - 2 shift shudder when im just easing on it. If I hit it at WOT it shifts ok, it seams to punch 2nd pretty hard. But if im just crusing it will shudder from a 1 - 2 Shift.

It came with some fluid in it, I topped off a couple quarts of mercon V before I put i drove it. You think a fluid filter/flush with NEW fluid may solve this? What usually causes the shudder?

Ok... change the fluid asap. Why didn't you put new fluid into it?!

2 causes...
1 bad fluid
2 Faulty torque converter

Most of the time it is bad fluid though. Get some 12 quarts of mercon V in there and you should be good.

ok thats what I thought. The reason i didnt is because mercon V is $5 a quart X 12 = $60 in fluid. Should I change the filter?

A new trans and you were worried about $60.00?? I don't know if you need to change the filter, but if I was going to drain my trans. and refill, Why not change it.

Anyone know if the torque conv. should be drained also? I would think so if it is bad fluid.

I don't understand.

Isn't this a rebuilt transmission?

Didn't they put new fluid in it when they rebuilt it?

Some people say that Mercon V is not compatible with Mercon III (mixed together). What kind of fluid did the rebuilder use?

Do you have a warranty on the transmission?

No this transmission is a crate tranny, its a Jasper. I dont know what kind was in it, the dipstick said use mercon but who knows, Im going to do the new fluid trick and see how she does.. god i dont want to do another one of these jobs !

I think he said it was a lightly used re-built, so with that in mind, I would never take anything for granted and change both the fluid and filter as well as checking to be sure that you have upgraded accumulators.

Coolant could have gotten into the system or anything else for that matter.

As far as I know, the only Mark VIII trans that said Mercon V on the dipstick was the 98.

Did this company say that this trans was compatible with your year car? There were changes to the TCC solenoid in the newer transmissions, as well as some wiring changes.

I got got for cheaper than that right at the Lincoln/Mercury dealer!! Don't ask for it by the quart!!! Get it by the gallon!

Oh great....Bud is starting to stutter now. ;)

The torque converter is NOT going to shutter when shifting gears, it shutters when engaging into lock-up, so don't condone it just yet.

It sounds more like a friction issue with the 1-2 clutch to me, which is most likely caused by the differences in fluid types, expecially considering you don't know whats in there and you only added 2 extra quarts.

Here is what I recommend (take it for what it is, I worked at a Transmission shop for a few years), drop the pan, inspect for metal and other debris, change the filter, drain the converter, and refill the system with 14 quarts of M5.

Orrrrr....find a shop that has a "BG" fluid exchange machine and have them "flush" it, in which they will do a 99% fluid exchange from whatever is in there to Mercon 5.

Also....what is the "new fluid trick"?

"Oh great....Bud is starting to stutter now. ;)"

OK Jess, I was a quart low on M-V...topped off and I'm good again......

whahaha you guys are hilarious ! The new fluid trick is draining the fluid and adding new M5. hahah nice trick huh ?

I have a new issue now and my spark plug boots are stuck in the block ! two of them were stuck and literally broke off in the whole and i had to pull all the pieces out with needle nose and a shop vac before i took the plugs out. So now i need new plugs, the trans flush and ill be on the road ! Thanks again guys
