HELLO EVERYONE,IM NEW TO ALL THIS SO PLEASE BE PATIENT WITH ME. I HAVE JUST BOUGHT AN 86 CONTINENTAL AND AS I DROVE IT HOME STEAM STARTED COMING FROM THE VENTS ON THE DASH ,EVEN WHEN THE HEATER/AC CONTROLS ARE TURNED OFF CAN ANYONE HELP ME?

RE: 1986 CONTI HEATING

Steam (boiling hot) or just vapor?

If vapor, your AC is working just enough to lower the air temperature down to the dew point. You usually see a puff of vapor when you turn on the AC, as the temperature of the air transfers through the dew point.

If continuous vapor, your AC needs Freon/service.

If boiling hot steam, your heater core is leaky. Be careful.

it doesnt appear to be hot but if you put your hand in front of a ventit is slightly warm.also ,the steam is continuous and there seems to be water dripping from under neath of the front doors. do you know if our a/c specialists in england use the same stuff as you do in the states, thanks

Hi there .It doesnt seem to smell of anything in particular, does this make a difference?

RE: 1986 CONTI HEATING

No smell = not coolant = no leaks!

If you are in a high humidity area, what you are seeing is water vapor. Maybe your AC/Heater dampener needs work. This valve mixes outside air with inside (conditioned) air.

Automotive AC is the same world wide (except maybe Russia, where they build cars with the same schematic as a 1955 Chevy.)

thanks a lot for your advice,i will source a menual and start fiddling with things .because the steam mists up the windows i must drive with them rolled down and as your probably aware its always the same weather over here.........bloody COLD!!!!!

RE: 1986 CONTI HEATING

where exactly is "over here"??

Always cool to hear about an american luxury car in europe.

I'm thinking something isn't exactly adding up. if it's winter i wouldn't expect any dew from anythign other than perhaps the heater core.. But if it's clear and it doesn't smell (assuming there is antifreeze in the motor), it doesn't sound like coolant.

Start by checking coolant level. if that's low, bad sign.

Is the carpet getting wet?
