Hi,
I find this 1986 Jaguar XJS with a Corvette engine and tranny. The car is in excellent condition and the car runs great. The guy is asking for $4,995 but he will let it go for $3,800.
What do you guys think of this car, should I get it?
The car dose not pass emissions,Why dose this car not pass and car I make it pass?
Iam going to fixs it up and make it fast.

Here are some pictures.

RE: 1986 Jaguar XJS

Might make a fun toy, but otherwise it's not worth that much IMO... Ironically, the Vette engine, which I'm sure makes the car 10 times more reliable, also makes it not worth much as a collectable.

Do all the gauges work with the chevy power? What are the miles? Is that rust where the plate attaches to the trunk? Does eveything else work, i.e. interior lights, power options, exterior lights?

My take would be that if the car isn’t “perfect” in every other aspect, it’s not worth it even as a toy.

You said you are going to fix it up and make it fast. If you are getting it as a hobby car then get it if you like it. Otherwise for a reliable dally driver I would pass.

All the gauges work but the odometer dose not work. All the power stuff work and the lights work.I did not look at the rust.

I want to make a drag car.

RE: 1986 Jaguar XJS

That's a pretty car but it looks like a money pit to me. If you want to have fun drag racing get something light with a V8 and invest your money in speed parts. An older Mustang with a 302 is a good place to start and they can be bought relatively cheaply.

RE: 1986 Jaguar XJS

How do you know its a vet motor? cause he told you it was? I thought vet motors have corvette written on the valve covers, but I dont know chevy at all. It is very common to see jags with the 350's in them. I just cant see buying a car for four grand that already has rust on it. I am willing to bet he didnt pay more than a couple grand for it. The exterior condition of the motor is not all that impressive either. Looks to me like they grabbed any ole 350 and threw it in there. They make kits to do it cheeply. That is also a very heavy car and will take much more power to make it go fast. What about the seats. I see that they are covered so I immagine they are probably not in the greatest condition. Final comment. If it is a vette motor what year is it. The ones in the late 70's early 80's were very very slow. I think some had less than 200 hp. Is there any way to find out how many miles were on the engine/tranny before it got put in? We already know there is no way to tell how many after.

Edit: I just looked at the pictures again. Looks like the underside of the hood is very rusty. Also looks like the bottom edge of the trunk is starting to rust. Every bolt under the hood as well as the sill where the hood sits are rusty. even the cross members are rusting. Look at how dirty the engine compartment is. If a dealer cant take the time to do something as simple as cleaning the engine bay then they have not taken the time to check the car out. I would expect that from a private party, but not somebody with a dealer markup. I also noticed the dash carpet. Cant look good under there. I strongly suspect that the car has been repainted. There is surface rust everywhere but where a normal paint job would cover. Even at that some of the paint is bubbling. That cant be good.

If quizzes are quizzical, what are tests?

The car is at a deal that you sell your onwer car.The owner of the lot is going to call the guy up and ask what engine it is.I did not look at the seat but half the back seat need work.

Good enough for me. ;)

That'll be as rare as a Lincoln at a drag strip! :)

RE: 1986 Jaguar XJS

My two cents..

As said above, just because the guy "says" its a vette engine doesnt mean it's a "Fast Vette Engine".

I think there was a L98 vette that made a whopping 200HP in the mid 80's vette.

Also, if you took the 3800-4000 dollars and put it into items for your Mark 8.. you'd have one helluva beast and a great drag car

Around 1500-2K on a good trans
900 ish on a good covertor
1000 ish on 4.10
3400-3900 and instant 13's!!!

Add 500 for a driveshaft for your freeway fun and your all set!

I'd rather see you throw some money at your mark 8, rather than someone elses "money pit".

IMHO it'd be money much better spent, and you'd be much happier in the long RUN.

RE: 1986 Jaguar XJS

that motor looks like the L82 engine they came out with in the 1973 Vette...at least the intake looks like the L82's.

that back then was an advertised 250hp 350.
add in the curb-weight of a Jaguar XJS body/chassis (4000 lbs), you are most likely going to end up with something a little slower than a Mark VIII....all depending on what that 350 is. If they try to tell you it's got more than 250hp, ask for a spec sheet from the engine build. ALL professional engine builders use a sheet to document the engine.

I would run.....run far.

I would run right beside you Craig!
it'd be like a DRAG RACE!
*HAHA*

RE: 1986 Jaguar XJS

That looks like it could be a nice car for $1200-$1500, if it runs well. Any more than that and it's not worth it.

RE: 1986 Jaguar XJS

The car runs great but it is very slow,You cant burn out in it.I think Iam going to look around for a Project Car.Ill keep you post on new(used car) I found.

My friend has a 66-67 Mustang for $4000 but with a inline 6 and 3 speed.
