Hi. im new to your forum. thanks for having me.

I have a 1988 lincoln town car and it just stopped idling the other day. i have checked the spark plugs and wires. changed plugs cause they were just black. then i had a friend of mine tell me that the EGR valve is half eletrical and that they seemed to go out and cause this problem. i changed that out and it still wont idle. i can step on the gas and keep it running, but it sounds like its choking to death, but as soon as i let off the gas, it dies. does anyone know when this could be? i checked alot of the other posts and didnt find anything, but if someone knows of a post that i didnt see, then it would be greatly appreciated. im at my wits end now.

If plugs are black you're running way rich and have too much carbon build up. Also are you burning oil or coolant?

This could be one of many issues, do you have a CE light on?

Sound like the Idle Air Bypass valve. Not enough air at idle equals burning rich and 'choking'.

hi. sorry for taking so long to reply. i had to do some more investigating and figured out the engine is bad. apparently, the last owner neglected to inform me that he had driven the car without water when the radiator busted. he fixed the radiator but he said the car hadnt been running right since then. seems to have over heated and just drove it like the way it was after he replaced the radiator. so now im in the process of switching out motors on this car. thanks for all the help.
