1996: 3800 RPM and thats it...

My roomates Conti has a problem. When it hot 3800 RPM it will just cut out, then back up to 3800 and cut out again. Its like the rev limiter is kicking in.

Fuel pressure tests fine. New plug, wires and IAC went in today. Same problem. Also the battery has been replaced.

Thinking its the coil packs but I thought I would see what you all say first. There is no CE by the way.

Related or not, the power steering also cuts out with "check power assist". Read on here that it could be the charging system, but again - new battery so not sure.

Really? The alt would cause an RPM drop out? Weird.

But I did tell him to replace the battery for the PAST YEAR! I was pretty sure the alt was toasted by the bad battery.. but when he replaced it all seemed well.

I am sure if I tell him its the alt he will just put it off.
 
Ya.. So I told him it could be the alt. He is like "ok, well if it kills the battery its under warrenty.".

Oh well. I tried. Not my car :)
