1st gear acting wack!

So this is carried over from the brakes forum now that we know it's not the brakes.

The car acts like I'm pumping the brakes when I'm almost at a complete stop. whether slowing to a stop or just releasing the brakes.

It does it in drive and in manual 1st but not in manual 2nd, and only when it is warmed up, like coming off the highway. I figure it is something wrong with 1st gear.

Anyone have any ideas. Oh, the tranny just got rebuilt too.

Did you try holding the brake pedal just enough to keep the BOO switch engaged like I mentioned before?

Sounds like a bad first gear ! And since you just got it rebuilt.... what exactly was re-built? All new internal parts? Hate to say it, you may need another "rebuild"" or replacement.

As I said, it feels like I'm pumping the brakes as I let off the pedal from a stop. My foot is still on the pedal, I don't know if the brake light is on. Once completely off the pedal, it keeps jerking until I touch the gas pedal. Maybe I'm not understanding what the BOO switch is.

As for the rebuild, I think he did a standard rebuild, whatever that may intale. Clutches, seals, bands?

Did you have the 93 mark viii original tranny re-built? Is this a diff year tranny? Did it work fine right after the rebuild and now its doing it?? Does it do this at ALL during acceleration? Why wasnt it just easier to replace it with a 98 ? How hard does it "stop" when you come to a slow stop in 1st??Any sounds ??

Either way it sounds like you either have to deal with it, or its going to break soon. You may need yet another tranny.

It's the second time I've had the original '93 tranny rebuilt in three years.

This IS right after the rebuild. Not DURING acceleration. Not hard to stop but if you listen good it kinda sounds like grinding, not squeaking, brakes. I've just inspected and replaced the pads.

If it breaks soon it's his problem...warranty!!!

It also still has a bit of a hesitation going from park or reverse to drive and to reverse.

The brake lights (and lock-up control) will NOT be engaged as you let off of the brake. The way Ford brake light switches (BOO) work is that as soon as you start to let go of pressure, the lights will turn off, even if you have the pedal down. Try tapping the brake pedal to see if it stops.

If its still under warranty, it would be respectful to give the guy a chance to look at it before it completely grenades. :) Let them take it for a spin, it sounds to me like you're either having a converter lock-up problem, or the transmission is alternating shifting from 1st to 2nd while you're almost at a stop.

They had my car for two weeks rebuilding twice and then replacing the valve body. I have never met the actual builder, just the guy that takes it out and re-installs it.

Still, they need to know about the problem or they may claim you didn't give them the opportunity and then void the warranty.

I did inform the guy who installed it. He should tell the guy seeing as I don't have his number and the only link to him is the installer. Seems like for some reason he doesn't want to tell me where the guy is so I can converse with him myself. It would be a lot easier that way.
