2000 LS Seat Warmers

Hi all...

My 2000 LS seat warmer isn't working. Has anyone else experienced this?

I want to get it fixed, but am afraid of a few things:
1. It's a simple fix and the dealer will point and laugh at me; fuse, loose wire, etc.
2. It might cost an arm and a leg
3. It would lead to future electrical problems

Any advice or experience with a simple fix or other problems encountered would be great!

Thanks!!
Cory

You're not going to like hearing this, but we consistantly do 3 or 4 '00/'01 seat heater repairs a week. The heating elements burn out, usually in the seat bottom. This is the element with the control thermistor built in.

Ford has sent us a few SSMs about the frequency of heated seat repairs and they're actually quite funny. The elements break inside commonly, but are much more prone to do so because of what Ford so euphemistically calls (this is the actual quote from the SSM) " the increased mass of drivers in the statistically upper percentile of body weight range".

So now we know the corporatese term for bigass!

The repair involves stripping the seat down to its frame, replacing the element(s), and often the lower cushion. Don't count on spending less than $500.00.

There's a slim chance that your problem might be a switch or control unit under the seat, but elements are it 99.9% of the time.

Sorry for the bad news.

One more question

The light on my heated seats has gone on and off a couple of times, meaning that sometimes I press the button and the lights come on. Sometimes they dont. I have the same 2000 LS. Any ideas?

You touched on this in your other post, but could you clarify?

When you say the lights come on, do you mean they stay on and the seat truly heats up?

When you say they "don't light up", are you referring to both switches?
Do you see the Heater On light flicker when you first press the switch?
If you mean both switches, do they appear to both malfunction at the same time?

Are you even referring to the Heater On light or do you actually mean the nighttime switch illumination?

As to your question about where to get the switch/ashtray surround, you simply walk into any Ford or Lincoln Dealer, tell them what you want, give them some money, and they'll give you that part!!

Tomorrow I'll get you the part number and price. It's not much.
