Air conditioner problem

Greetings,
I need help with the AC on my 80yo mums car,
It's a 1990 model Lincoln Continental what it does is after a few minutes the AC compressor cuts off, the fan keeps blowing but here in Florida it gets hot fast,
Sometimes it will cut back on then off again.

I am a chevy person my expertise is with vettes,

I assumed it was that switch that cuts off the compressor when the freon gets too low,
not the case here,
My mum took the car to the fellow who fixes things for her that I don't,
He was rather vague and a bit cryptic but said it was a "relay" refused to tell me which one,
Just "AC Relay"
He went on to say it was no longer made and he had to get one from the junkyard and the price of the repair is 150.00
This seems high to me,
I could switch a reply pretty fast if I knew where it was and for that matter I could wire in a generic relay if need be,
Or being this is an old car I could just wire up a switch and relay to the compressor and forget what's cutting it off,

Hopefully you can offer food for thought, ideas and where are these relays on the car?
Thanks and Cheers,
P.
