Airbags--how long good for?

Well my marks a 93 and its basically 11 years old--my air bags have never went off--so hence the question: how long are the factory airbags supposed to last--it would seem to me that they would eventually dry up or something to that effect?!? Anyone have any knowledge of this---not that i plan on a crash anytime soon(knock on wood) but i wanna be safe

Did you buy your car new?

I'd say the front bags last anywhere from 50k-110k miles. It depends on the climate, how you drive it, etc..., as well as luck. Rear bags rarely go out, my last lincoln had 154k on the original bags. My '97 supposedly had them replaced, but i have a feeling the last owner got taken for a ride on that one.

Yup--the air collision bags---so seriously is anyone like 100% that they really do last like forever?? lol nothing last forever but u know

RE: Airbags--how long good for?

i guess i wasn't paying any attention.

Your air bags are fine. They won't dry up or anything.

RE: Airbags--how long good for?

Hmmmm first use---anyone have any recommended methods to induce a first use lol

RE: Airbags--how long good for?

Heres an idea......drive fast enough to find your speed limiter and then aim at a tall brick wall. Don't hit the brake. :7

RE: Airbags--how long good for?

See heres where the problem comes in--after racing my car up to the governor around 130mph and slamming into a brink wall--they might go off they might not but how wouuld i know after being instantaneously killed by the impact---you first need the impact in order to make the airbags go off so hence when the impact occurs im already dead so i wouldnt even they went off----so that ways ruled out as a test possibility---u guys gotta think these things through first lol

Ok, if you really want to know if they work or not, tinker with the ABS wires under the dash with the battery still connected. I'm sure if you find the right wire and short it out....POP! :+ Then you'll know for sure they work. But at that point don't try to repack them like you would a parachute. Just doesn't work that way. ;)

RE: Airbags--how long good for?

Remove the passenger side airbag (it isnt that hard to do). Then take a nine-volt battery and connect wires to the battery terminals. With the airbag out of the car and facing up (face down can shoot really really high and risk injury to others not quite as brave as you) touch the wires to the terminals in the connector. I'm almost positive a nine volt has the juice in it to actuate the system.

If this doesnt work, I can do a little more research and tell you exactly which wires to short in the car to make it go off. I'd hate for you to have to clean all the dust out of your car though, so we need to find a way to deploy it on a bench.

BTW..... http://www.car-part.com is a good place to look for a used replacement airbag =)

Actually, I was looking at the door jam sticker in my friends 99 Mercedes, and it said the Air bags should be replaced by 2013.
