Any suggestions for mechanical breakdown insurance?

I still have nearly a year and a half and 20,000 miles left on my original manufactures warranty, but we are considering getting an extended warranty when we get our 2000 Town Car. We got "hosed" time and time again at the shop with our '97 Lincoln...and we said we will get a warranty next time. I don't think a Town Car would cost much less in the shop than our Mark VIII.

Since I still have the manufacturer's warranty I can get a lower rate than if I did not still have the manu's warranty.

Anyone have any suggestions for any companies? I'm in California and I understand that a lot of non-CA insurance companies are not working with customers that reside in CA because of some new legislation (surprise).

Prices vary on this like used cars! But if anyone has any first hand experience with good companies and great rates, please advise.

Thanks.

You do NOT have to buy the extended coverage at the Lincoln~Mercury dealer that sold you your car. Shop around, as you did when you bought ther car at various L~M dealers, as well as Ford. Shop for the best price, and buy a FORD one, not any other one...only FORD. Ther's big mark-up in them, and lots of room for discounting. Some dealers will NOT discount, others will. Shop Around.

Ford offers a number of different policies at varing prices. The more they cover the more they cost. The deductable amount will also help to lower the price a bit. Sandy's advice was right on target, only buy a FORD policy, they spell out exactly what is covered and Ford will still be around when independent companies have gone out of business. The BEST three year-36,000 mile package available for my Mark, with $100 deductable, cost about $2200 in August, and quickly paid for itself. Prices DO vary at the dealerships so once you've decided on the coverage you need, shop around for the best deal. Your dealer will probably meet it.
Good luck with your new ride Dawn, hope you enjoy many safe miles in it.

Just a moot point....

The REAL reason many dealers do NOT discount is because there is an absolutle unGodly amount of PITA paper work associated with said sale of X-tended coverage. Probably more paperwork than involved with the sale of a home. Simply Mt. Rushmore of paperwork, and every year it gets bigger. Every dealership has its own policies regarding pricing of these. So, #1, don't expect landslide discounts on them, and #2 shop around a bit to try & get the best price, but don't make shopping for it your next career move! :) (I'd say 3 dealers ... 4 the most, should do it for you).

I got a pretty decent rate from a Lincoln/Mercury dealer....6 years/100,000 miles, $100 ded, for only $1,750! Better and cheaper than my local credit union.

However, it was NOT a FORD warranty, but someone that he said they have used for years and find most reputable. Weird that he wasn't trying to sell me an extended warranty from Ford.

BTW, this extended warranty is on a USED car, not a new one. Maybe that is why....

I'm gonna really confuse you when I tell you my wife & I bought an extended warranty when we bought her used Sable last year - a GM extended warranty at a Buick dealership on a Mercury vehicle! I forget the actual numbers, but suffice to say my wife was happy with a warranty and I was happy with the price, terms and coverage. I'm sure that had the vehicle been at the FLM dealer, it would've qualified for the 'Certified/Pre-Owned' program.
