If you get ads looking like they are a message from Windows through XP and 2000, I FINALLY found the fix!


Windows XP (Home and Professional editions):


-Click Start -> Control Panel
-Click Performance and Maintenance.
-Click Administrative Tools.
-Double click Services.
-Scroll down and highlight "Messenger" (a single click).
-Right-click the highlighted line and choose Properties.
-Click the STOP button.
-Select Disable or Manual under the "Startup Type" menu selection (we recommend the manual setting).

-Click OK.



Windows NT/2000 (Server and Professional editions):


-Click Start -> Setings -> Control Panel -> Admin. Tools -> Services
Scroll down and highlight "Messenger" (a single click).
-Right-click the highlighted line and choose Properties.
-Click the STOP button.
-Select Disable or Manual under the "Startup Type" menu selection (we recommend the manual setting).

Click OK.

I wonder if this has anything to so with the MSBlaster worm that's spreading right now. My router has been lit up like a Christmas tree all day from traffic trying to get in to my system. Not only that, but about half the websites I go to (including this one) are slow as hell.

There is no punishment too extreme or too cruel for spammers and these virus-creating MF'ers. They're only one step up on the evolutionary ladder from child molesters. Death would be way too kind.

Then again, why the hell does Microsoft have to have everything under the sun enabled by default? For that matter, why do they have to even INCLUDE all these BS bells and whistles? Do 99.999% of home users need network messaging? NO! How about they just make us an OPERATING SYSTEM and leave the fancy crap for some other company that knows what the hell they're doing. Sorry, just venting.

That may be the what I have called the pop up ads. I'll try that asn see if it works.

I don't have a problem with messenger behind a firewall.

At school, we found messenger to be a useful tool, as well as a good way to annoy others. If you have more than one computer on your network, you can send messages that appear in pop-up boxes. So when i wanted to talk to my friend cliff (whos computer name is "cliff", creatively) on the other side of the house without getting off my fat arse, i just open up a dos prompt, and type "net send cliff yo jackass" or something like that. Then a message box pops up on his screen that says "yo jackass". you could use wildcards too, i don't know how many times someone just sent a stupid message to everyone just to be dumb... like My spoon is too big!

Thats not a fix. Thats simply disabling the service.

Bottom line, you have that port open to the net chances are other services are also vulnerable !

On XP, consider enabling the firewall functionality or purchasing a inexpensive firewall appliance (cable modem/dsl router such as a Dlink DI604 at about $60 for instance) to protect your computer.

An antivirus is also a must-have tool now.

Is the Windows firewall sufficient or should I get an an after market?

You should get an after market one for sure. And disable the windows firewall.

Actually, the integrated Windows XP product isn't that bad, just not real configurable. It does a very good job of stopping intruders though, especially since you've already paid for it.

Alternatives such as zone alarm are fine to, but I prefer a less annoying hardware solution.

I run a Adtran Netvanta 3305 at home :) Stateful packet inspection firewall is integrated.. works good!
