BIOS Limitations?

Just lost a hdd as well. The thing is fried, it makes like a drill gun sound, I tried all the tricks but still won't even let me buy 5 more minutes.

Well I have a bit of a dinosour but it serves all my purposes. It is a DELL Dimensions XPS PIII 600 and the BIOS info is:

Phoenix BIOS
4.0 Release 6.0
4S4EB2X0.10A.0032.P10
BIOS Version A09

I was wondering if anyone knew a quick and easy way to find out what my hdd capacities are. I did have 2 40 gig but I want to make my Primary Slave an 80 or better. Do any of you know if I will have any issues - don't feel like calling DELL! Thanks...

RE: BIOS Limitations?

I'm no expert on the subject - but if you buy a Maxtor drive - it comes with software that raises the hard drive capacity of the bios - with an intermediary bit of software.

May be all "funk" but it worked on an old machine I had.

RE: BIOS Limitations?

If yours is a dinosaur, then what does that make mine (400Mhz PII)???

Dirt?

man, those were the days, when gas was 10 Cents a gallon, cars were all stick, and PII's were stil for sale.

RE: BIOS Limitations?

I highly advise against using the Disk overlay software from any company for any kind of data you care about. I've lost so many drives with that crap its ridiculous.

That bios MAY have a limitation around 60Gb, but I have no personal experience. Check on Dell's support site for a bios update. They do post them.

Cheap small drives can be had at surpluscomputers.com I think 40 over there is under $50.
