Blacked Out Icons

Somehow, all my icons on desktop and on the Menu Bar and the Task Bar are blacked ot. The shapes are there, but no color. Anyone got any ideas? I've deleted the video card driver and reloaded, but no change.

What operating system? Can you right-click on the Desktop and select Refresh? Try deleting the file named shelliconcache in your Windows folder and restarting, (it may be hidden).

Using Me Operating System. Tried all you suggested once before...am trying the deletion of shelliconcache again tho....be right back.

Nope....that didn't work either...icons are all black with M/S blue/while name of them under the icon. Weird! 'preciate the try tho....

From a knowledgebase article at Microsoft:

When Program Manager runs out of memory, it stops converting icons. The icons that have not yet been converted appear as black boxes.

Windows ME has only a limited amount of system resources - try setting your background to none instead of a picture and getting rid of some of the icons on your desktop.

Nope...that didn't work either...I read that KnowledgeBase article too...But I did it again anyway. Thanks. MicroSoft sucks, eh? I'll probably be upgrading to XP this weekend...that should take care of the problems.

Make sure you have enough RAM to run XP. At least 128MB. My brother tried running it with 64MB and to make a long story short, it didn't work. $20 and 256MB later, all was well.

No, not using Netscape and I have a 512M memory module installed.
I am about to reformat hard drive and re-install Me before I go out and spend $189.00 on XP Pro. If everything clears up with the new install, I guess it'll be time for upgrade to XP Pro to go along with the recent upgrade to new motherboard and Alithon XP2200 speed demon processer. Yes, it DID work with this new equip. before I lost the color in the icons. Thanks for all the hints guys...Will let y'all know how it turns out.

Pro...and guess what? It discovered virus on my boot sector on my c: drive!!! After running for an hour, it decided that I couldn't boot nor run a virus program! Ended up doing a low-level format on the drive....only takes about 6 hours to do that! Am just now doing regular format and will reinstall XP. Man...talk about when it rains and it pours!!! Yeah, I know, I shoulda had a set of emergency boot disks from Norton Anti-Virus. Does ANYONE do what you're supposed to? Stay tuned!
