Blend door actuator help

So for Christmas Santa got me a issue with my blend door.
I've read tons of post on this blend door issue prior to it breaking in anticipation of this eventually happening. A lot sooner then I thought.
With there being so many post it can be a little overwhelming, seeing as it can be different things.
I have anticipated that I'll be removing the dash, which I'm fine with. I'm very mechanically inclined and capable of doing this task, but in hopes of some general knowledge before I get into it.
I will start out with what I've found, I was running a/c - cold air yesterday Christmas eve and switched it do heat to defrost the window. It was 80 degrees here in NC during the day! Hence using ac. I went to switch back to cold air and nothing happened, it stayed on heat.
Once I got home I dropped the glove box to inspect, as you probably know you can't see much at all.
Things I've done to check, all while my hand was on the metal rod, I first switched to cold air and nothing happened, but I was able to then move the metal rod and manually move I'm assuming the blend door and my ac was back. Then I switched back to heat and could feel the actuator move as I raised degree by degree to then fully engaging the heat. I did not feel the actuator when I tried switching to cold air.
I'm guessing but could be wrong, could it just possibly be the actuator itself? And no broken arms?
Any input would be great, I know this maybe a long post but wanted to describe as best as I could and try to narrow this down before I start tearing into things since a lot of you have overcome these issues.

Thanks again and merry Christmas!
