Blue Oval Chips Transmission?

My younger brother owns a 1996 Mark VIII and is in need of a new transmission. His car has about 130k miles, but he plans on keeping it for a very long time. Since he doesn't know a whole lot about cars he wanted me to find him a new transmission that would be very reliable, but yet keep the feeling of the car about the same. I don't think he wants to enhance the car anytime soon. I was looking closely at the base level 4R70W at Blue Oval Chips for $1200. Can anyone let me know if this would be a good choice for my brother, and if not, of any alternatives. Thank You.

I've never priced the base units, but from my experience with his performance unit, it should be one of the most solid trannys you can find.

In my experience, anything purchased from Lonnie at BOC is not only going to be a quality product, but his post sale (read: AFTER he has your money) product support is without peer. Don't misunderstand me, I have never bought a trans from him, but those things I have purchased have performed BETTER than he claimed. Also, anytime there might be a difficulty, he is simply a phone call away with clear, concise, and correct advice. I have called Lonnie many times with Mark VIII issues that had absolutely nothing to do with the products he's sold me; but because I am a BOC customer he was patient and informative even when it certainly wasn't his responsibility. IMO, geeting Lonnie on your team when you are a Mark VIII owner is a total no - brainer.

I just had that one installed with all the upgrades you can get, except for the slump deep pan, I just got the one with the drain plug. Great transmission so far and that package comes with the torque converter.

Thanks for the responses, they've been very helpful. My brother intends on ordering that transmission in the next couple of days. However, he does have another question for me to ask. He also wants to buy a brand new transmission cooler, but he's not sure which one he wants. So what would probably be the best brand and cooling capacity for his car, which is pretty much stock.

Lonnie would almost thrown one in for free if you bought a tranny from him.
