I've been wanting to finish the underside of the hard tonneau cover on my EL Camino. My regular body shop says the best thing to do would be to bring it to a boat place and have them gel coat it, it will come out nice and smooth.

I know nothing about the processs, any boaters here who can educate me on this process? I always like to be prepared before going for an estimate.

Well depending on the size and coating that you want, gel coating is really more about labor charge than it is about the cost of the product. If you want a very smooth and glassy surface than a boat place is where to go, or look for a good fiberglass place in your area, explain to them what you are looking to do and have them tell you the options first. Most places will work with you on what you want to get out of the coat.
