A great good day to my fellow Mark VIII owners,
Hopefully someone can help shed some light onto pain in the neck problem I'm having with my 98 mark viii. The check engine light came on for the first time about 3 weeks ago. The code reader said Speed Sensor located on the transmission. I replaced it with one from autozone, not 20 miles later, same problem! This time I went to my Lincoln dealer and purchased a numbers matching speed sensor and IAC for my car to cover all the bases. I installed it and guess what, The darn engine light is lit again and say's speed sensor. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, my NYS inspection is about to expire with a check engine light on it will not pass. thanks - Frank

Go to one of your chain stores and have them re-hook up their reader and get the print out or at least write down the specific code(s) that is being thrown. Then get back here.

Steve the code autozone gave me was P029a hope this helps Thanks Steve

Did a search and this is what i found, P029A Cylinder 1 – Fuel Trim at Max Limit, not even sure if that applies to the Mark VIII, go and get the the codes read again.

When I looked up the code just now, P029A says "fuel air metering". To me that sounds like a restricted intake air flow, or a dirty MAF. (per my own Actron mter)

Steve, sorry it took a while to get back to you. But I was able to get someone with a brain to page down the scanner to get all the codes. They are:
P0500-veh speed sensor A malfunction,
P294E-fuel/air metering aux emission controls,
P0444-evap emission control system purge valve C open
P04B9-aux emission controls.
What if anything can be done to correct these and where the H are these parts located.Or should I crush the car and make it a floor lamp

Actually, I haven't a clue.....I'd take it to a Lincoln dealer and get a diagnoses/price for repair. Or hopefully someone here with a little more knowledge of all the systems can give you a hand!

On the other hand, have your seen A Christmas Story?

Now that you have them recorded i would disconnect the battery to reset the computer and see what comes up when you restart. Then go from there.

Steve, I disconnected the battery for four hours, hooked it back up, checked no codes, let the engine run for about 10 minutes. Hooked up actron scanner, can back with two pending codes, the first code was P294E-fuel/air metering aux emission control, the second one was P048b have no idea any help appreciated Thanks Frank

P294E, not sure if that is legit code, most have 4 numbers at the end. You may need to drive the car for 3 or more cycles for any codes to come back.

You don't have a chip or PCM tune do you?
