Coated headers??

RE: Coated headers??

Yes, there is a large benefit. The look is the least important part. The coating keeps the heat inside the pipes rather than further spreading it to the engine bay and possibly melting things that are near the headers. Also hotter exhaust moves faster through the system which is a benefit. Coated headers last a lot longer because there is more protection for the metal and more to eat through before a leak can occur.
In looking at headers make sure they are coated inside and out. Having them only coated on the outside is the cheap way and will lead to the same problems. I know for sure the Kooks midlength headers are JetCoated inside and out.

RE: Coated headers??

Kooks were what I was looking at, just the extra almost 2 bills, ya know, if I could save that...well sounds like it's worth it, man this is eating through my funds fast!!!

RE: Coated headers??

The headers will still rust, it will just take longer. The coating also will not keep the outside temps from getting as hot, it will just take longer to do. Heat transfer is minimized, to increase velocity in the tubes. It is a good product, but will not last forver. I used the sterling coating on mine, and have been happy so far. The chrome like finish will not last, however. It turns to a dull grey after a few days of use.

RE: Coated headers??

After reading about all the problems with the crappy interior Mac Header coatings getting into the engine (either through the EGR or by reversion) and ruining the piston/cylinder seal, how sure is everyone that Jet Hot doesn't do the same thing. There is some discussion that part of the problem could be the VIII's EGR system which is different than the SOHC engines, or the exhaust cam timing which may increase reversion. I would tend to only want the outside coated. Also, if you want to keep the heat inside the tubes, the insulating wrap is much more effective than any coating, but will foster corrosion. Hot pipes rust quicker, although it's usually the tail pipes that are first to go.

RE: Coated headers??

You can’t just get a can of this stuff & DIY I assume.
Of course now the person backed out of buying my laptop so looks like nothing will get done for a while.

RE: Coated headers??

no DIY, it's more of a "dip in molten coating" type thing. You can get some high heat paint from autozone, that's what i used. it's supposed to have ceramic which would insulate better, but i have my doubts on it's effectiveness. nonetheless, the spray paint is better than bare metal.

if you lose the EGR you shouldn't have to worry about any coating or slag getting into the cylinder. if you're in a commie state you might have to keep the EGR connected though.

hehe, that's a good one, Dave.

and if you have a oven bake them, to make the coating stronger, yes it is effective, i have done it before,

RE: Coated headers??

I got G.W.'s little brother JEB running my state; about as far right as you can get.
So the high heat paint is a “in the middle” compromise between the coated & uncoated. That sounds like something to look in to.

RE: Coated headers??

No, the high heat paint will last about a month. The coating will last a couple of years.

RE: Coated headers??

Nice stuff.. thanks for the link!

I hacked a set of MAC headers to fit, and thought I'd wrap the headers so I wouldn't need to get them coated afterwards. That DEI silicone spray is made for their wrap to keep water out. Summit sells the complete kit (including 50' of 2" wrap, the stainless clips, plus 1 can of silicone coating) for ~$70, much less than the DEI site. Thought I'd get two cans of the Silicone Coating stuff and call it done. Didn't want my welded in tubes to rust and look ugly, my MIG welding isn't much to brag about, plus I know the MAC coating is crap.

I've found that most manufacturer sites are way overpriced in their online stores compared to 'distributors', especially small speed shop 'distributors'. There's a huge difference of opinion in profit margins out there. ;)
