Cruise recall repair and steering wheel lights

So Moose had the cruise recall surgery and now the on/off cruise button lights on the steering wheel don't light up. Anyone know if this could be related or just a coincidence?

It shouldnt. However, with the hammer mechanics that are on the loose out there, who knows. If I remember correctly they are hard wired onto the board and would not be easy to replace. Does the cruise wok?

Yeah the cruise works fine. The dealer claims the recall service could not have caused it but I still find it odd they went out at the same time!

The backlighting circuit is completely removed from the cruise control function, so I would have to say coincidence.

Ya. The lighting is not part of the cruise system itself. Normally both dont go out though if its a lamp issue. It could be a sign of a bad clock spring thought, both paddles will go out then. Try the horn and see if the cruise does start to act up.

If you do need a new paddle set, let me know. I have a source for new OEM for cheap, I think around $20 for most colors. If you need a clock-spring, they may have that too. If not Jamie would have a used one I am sure.

Backlighting??!? The cruise controls are supposed to be backlit on the steering wheel? Seriously? Mine has never done this.

I never said both, I said the On/Off buttons which means only one side. I had another talk with the LM dealer today and they said to bring it in on Monday and they'll take a look. It's just such an odd coincidence that they were fine and then the minute they do the recall the lights are out. Tomorrow I'll break out the service manuals and really study the wiring to see if there is any kind of connection. Tonight I'm off to an Hawaiian Luau and pig roast at an Italian restaurant in the oyster and clamming town of Oyster Bay... go figure!

One side is a light then, they use a common lead in the clock spring. Mush easier to replace the paddle set for $20 some odd bucks (new) then have the dealer charge for diagnostic and repair - if they do, sound like the will not charge to look at it.

But there is no way they could have caused it. May as well say that when they worked on the car a dome light went out.

i have switches and just the pc boards inside with working lights, sometimes when i get a car with deployed bags the covers blow off the cruise switches and get broken, so when they do ii test the boards to make sure they light still and save them just incase something like this comes along, a burnt out light! im sure i have a few on/off boards if you decide you want to change it if the dealer tries selling you a song and dance for 18 million.

From what I've been reading, I don't have much confidence in some dealerships doing this recall.

I read one where the dealer disconnected the brake fluid level sensor.

Here's one way the dealer may have caused this :D:

They installed the recall harness, then test drove the car to make sure the cruise worked. It didn't work at first, so the test driver pushed the cruise button too hard to try to get it to work (quiet crack sound).

It still doesent work, so he drives it back to the dealership and they find that they hooked up the harness wrong or the harness is defective.

They fix that, and the cruise works, but they don't notice the switch circuit board was damaged earlier so, the light doesn't work.:D:D
