My emergency brake cable snapped. Can I replace it woth any year emergency brake cable or is it specific to my 95? How much should one of these cost? How hard is the install?

Thanks.

RE: Emergency Brake Cable

I would check with fordpartsnetwork. It can't be too expensive.

I loosened mine for the rear brake fix and it wasn't too bad. The install is probably easy. I can check my dvd when I get home.

Two bricks work well, too. One in front, one in back. Probably could "borrow" some from someone's landscaping! :)

How'd you snap it, anyway?

RE: Emergency Brake Cable

Here's what the manual says, it is probably easier than the long set of instructions makes it seem. I used an allen wrench to pull the tensioner clip down.

Cable Tension

Removal

1. Fully release the parking brake.

2. Raise vehicle on axle-type hoist. Refer to «Section 00-02».

3. Removal of cable tension requires two people to disengage and reload the tensioner. One person is to unlock the tensioner by pulling downward on the clip. While the clip is disengaged, the second person is to apply the parking brake control fully to the last notch position. The tensioner spring will compress allowing cable slack to return. Next lock the tensioner by pushing up on the clip. Ensure locking lever is secure by rotating it toward threaded rod. Wrap tape or wire around the locking lever and threaded rod to prevent any accidental release.

4. Release the parking brake control. The cables, tensioner and control assembly may be removed.

Cable, Front

Removal

1. Raise vehicle. Refer to «Section 00-02».

2. Remove cable tension by using cable tension removal procedure as outlined.

3. Disconnect front cable from intermediate cable at cable connector.

4. Remove cable snap-in retainer from cable bracket using a 13mm (1/2 inch) 12 point box-end wrench to depress retaining prongs. Allow cable to hang.

5. Lower vehicle.

6. Remove LH cowl trim panel.

7. Disconnect cable from control assembly at clevis.

8. Remove cable snap-in retainer from control assembly using a 13mm (1/2 inch) 12 point box-end wrench to depress retaining prongs.

9. Pull cable and grommet up through floorpan.

Installation

1. Start cable through hole in floorpan and secure grommet in place.

2. Push prong retainer into parking brake control until prongs are secure and connect cable to control clevis.

3. Install cowl side trim panel.

4. Raise vehicle. Refer to «Section 00-02». Position cable through front cable bracket and push prong into bracket.

5. Connect intermediate cable to front cable connector.

5. Adjust parking brake as outlined and lower vehicle.

Cable, Intermediate

Removal

1. Raise vehicle. Refer to «Section 00-02».

2. Remove cable tension as outlined.

3. Disconnect intermediate cable from right rear cable and front cable at cable connector.

4. Remove cable snap-in retainer from tensioner housing and body bracket using a 13mm (1/2 inch) 12 point box-end wrench to depress retaining prongs.

5. Remove cable routing clips for body side rails and rear crossmember by squeezing clip together with needle-nose pliers between cable and crossmembers. Remove cable.

Installation

1. Route cable and secure snap-in retainer to body bracket and tensioner housing by pushing retainer fully until prongs are secure.

2. Connect cable ends to front and right rear cable connectors.

3. Secure cable routing clips to body side rail and crossmember by inserting clip into hole fully.

4. Adjust cable tension as outlined and lower vehicle.

2. Connect cable ends to front and right rear cable connectors.

3. Secure cable routing clips to body side rail and crossmember by inserting clip into hole fully.

4. Adjust cable tension as outlined and lower vehicle.

Cable Adjustment

1. Apply parking brake control fully on 445N (100 lb) foot pedal effort. Release parking brake control. Repeat application and release.

2. Place the transmission in NEUTRAL (N). Raise the vehicle on an axle-type hoist. Refer to «Section 00-02».

3. With parking brake control in OFF position, grasp tensioner around housing, then using a tool similar to the one shown, hook the end into the rounded end of clip between clip and housing. Unlock clip by pulling downward with the tool and support tensioner, tensioner spring will take up cable slack and preload cables. While holding tensioner, lock the clip by pushing up on bottom of clip. If clip does not slide up, move assembly slightly to align closest groove on adjuster rod to the clip.

4. Examine tensioner for remaining cable take up capability. If none is present, check all cables, parking brake control and brackets for possible damage or deflection. Replace damaged parts and tension system by using initial installation adjustment procedure.

Initial Installation Adjustment

1. Install parking brake control tensioner and all cables with routing clips. Connect all cables together with tensioner. (Be sure to install correct adjuster for rear brake usage).

2. Place the transmission in NEUTRAL (N). Raise the vehicle on an axle-type hoist. Refer to «Section 00-02».

4. Apply parking brake control fully on 445N (100 lb) foot pedal effort. Release parking brake control. Repeat application twice and release.

5. Repeat Step 3 to take up any additional slack.
