ETC Failsafe Mode

I own a 2004 Lincoln LS and when I step on the accelerator while the car is in park it seems to have low compression or sluggish to rev up the RPM's. Then I was traveling down a main street the other day, the car began to vibrate a little and the the ETC Failsafe appeared and I was only able to move to the side of the road, no peddle.

So I turned off the engine and restarted the car and drove off as normal but as soon as I got close to home the ETC Failsafe came on again so I coasted into my driveway. Can somebody tell me whats going on?confused: in St Louis

The motor that drives your throttle is going bad...either it's a bad part all together.. or your throttle blades are binding and creating too much effort for the little electric stepper motor.

buddy of mine just went thru this with his 3V F150.. the throttle return was too tight and smoked the stepper motor.. he replaced the stepper motor and the truck runs like a champ.

Are these cars (and truck) fly by wire? (Electronic Throttle Control!)

Same Problem

Same Problem

I just bought my 2004 Ls 8/28 and I've taken it in for a new Catilator Converter, got it back last week and last night it just stopped excelerating. I pulled over it coughed a little, I shut it off and started it up again and works fine.

I called my local dealer (who just replaced the catilator converter) and he tells me it could be anything. If I would like to give him $100.00 he could tell me what the problem is. UGHHHHH

Ahh the wonderful world of "pay us to tell you what is wrong"..

But he's right, it "could be anything"...especially if a restart cleared it up.

have you downloaded your windows updates?

Well, i just joined the ETC failsafe mode club this morning... I was trying to accelerate to get to the highway and suddenly my LS 2003 gave me this infamous message. I had to pull over and restart. I guess i'm in for a lot of trouble now. I hope my Lincoln dealer will find out fast 'cause if this happens again when my wife is driving, boy i'm i gone hear about it !!!

ECT... Electronic Throttle Control.. I used to own a 2003 Ls and I was having the same problem. I went to three different dealers, and they all came up with the same answer.. " could be a number of things" we gave it a "test" drive and everything seems to be working just fine " ! I had that problem for nearly 8 months before i decided to sell the car. Now I own a 2004 ls.. runs great.. knock on wood.. Falcon, if you dont mind me asking how many miles are on your car ? Jeepee you as well.. whats the milage..
Also if you look on this topic and go back as far as you can .. 100 days or whatever.. You'll come across my post on the ECT Fail safe mode.. alot of people responded to me, and hopefully you can get some answers there !! Good luck guys !!

What does this mean.. ETC failure mode ?? ( 1 2 3 ... Last Page)

Replace your Electronic Throttle Control module (the throttle control motor) and it should fix all your guys' problems.

Be aware that RFI from the coils mis-firing can also cause this. The noise gets in the wire harness and the PCM freaks out and puts the car in fail safe mode. The only way to really find this is to stress test the coils. Most Ford dealers should be able to do this. Ask the service manager if they have the COP stress tester.
The coils could be mis-firing from oil in the spark plug wells. Check for that.

Same thing on my 05

Same thing on my 05

I have the same problem. For a few months the car has been missing every once in a while. Power seems to have fallen off lately. Last week it threw the ETC Fail Safe message when my wife was driving and she had to pull to the side of the freeway and restart. Once it restarted it was ok. I was surprised because after all that and the misfires there was no check engine light. Last night the check engine light came on and eureka it's incredibly sluggish now. Told my wife to go to Auto Zone and have them give her the codes.

Thanks Asia for the info regarding the ETC Failsafe mode. My LS 2003 has 54k. The problem was finally solved by replacing the computer (PCM). Water was dripping from the sun roof (the drain tubes were unplugged...), it went on the computer and dammaged it. Apparently, this is a common problem on this model. I fixed the sunroof drain tubes myself. Unfortunetly, it took many repairs including a new throttle body, TPS, EPB breaking module before my dealer could find the real cause... Chao ! JP
