Flashlight Drags

The Blue Flame took on the locals at a unique venue known as Flashlight Drags today. :)

These events are street car, heads up, 1/8th mile races at local airstrips with no starting tree or time slips. Cars are paired and lined up and the race is started with the starter girl turning on a flashlight. The winner trips a laser beam at the end of the eighth mile course. You can pair up with a 'grudge match' or run in the group known as 'fun runs'.

The local turnout was nothing short of amazing. I arrived 5 minutes before the gates opened and the entrance road was backed up to the highway. I soon learned I was 50 cars back as I signed in and was assigned car number 050. That number quicly grew, exceeding 100 race cars, and before the event was finished I had noted cars in the 190s. So almost 200 cars descended upon the airfield for a summer afternoon of local entertainment as well as several hundred spectators.

I soon lost count of the number of runs I had and the wins/losses. But it wasn't long before several drivers had seen the Lincoln perform and started picking out the Blue Flame as their opponent. One suprising call came from a new silver Z06 Corvette. After the start of the race, I noticed he had not jumped on me and I looked to the side and did not see him either. A quick glance in the mirror revealed nothing but his smoke trail and I knew he would soon be bearing down hard. Needless to say, the 'Vette outran the Lincoln but it was no gimme. :D

Three classes were picked by judges to race in eliminations, and the Blue Flame was proud to seed the "Steet Contenders" class much to the approval of the spectators but alas lost to an older hemi-powered mopar by a fender.

Cool :) How do like the MT DR's?

Actually I was a bit disappointed. Traction off the line was an issue. I started by dropping from 30 psi to 22 psi then 1 psi each run until I couldn't tell any difference, which was at 17 psi.

Now at a real track with adequate track prep, they may be just fine. But I was definitely spinning each launch and could not find any routine to remedy the situation after several changes in tire pressure and burnout length. But apparently, everyone else had the same issues, so it really became more of a 'driver's race' rather than a horsepower contest.

The highway ride quality is a bit less than desirable too.

I'm definitely going to have to ease up on the burnouts if I'm going to get any life out of them. :D

At Atl dragway, I am happy with 20psi. Any more or less - wheel spin. I read somewhere, you just clean them off rather than do a Nitto style smoke show with them to hook. I try and do a 5 second burnout with mine.

I am going to put them on and try to learn how to launch with the sc, since I will need to get new tires and 18" rims shortly.

Maybe I should've just gotten Nittos? :p

Actually, that's one method I didn't try. There was a couple 'quickie' burnouts, but I would still spin at the launch. It did seem I could hold the burnout too long and notice even worse traction off the line. There's a track rental upcoming in 3 weeks, maybe I can practice some more.

But the 'smoke show' is part of the fun as well. :D

JP how much did those MT drag radials cost?

Check it out... Video. Give it time to load, it's worth the wait for the commentary.

BTW, they're 255/50-16s and that price was all inclusive, taxes, delivery, mounting and balancing. I could've got them a bit cheaper online but not shipped nor mounted and balanced.

I needed the 315/45-16s!

Lots of corvettes eh?

'Bout as many as mustangs. :p

The only 'fast' ones were a couple newer Z06s(there was a red and silver one, maybe more). The others were either slow or only ran once or twice where I didn't get to see them. Other noteables included a Shelby 500 and a Dodge Viper, both who were not impressive.

There were quite a few cars who only seemed to run a couple times and then sat the event out in the infield. Not me, I was either in line to run, running or on my way back to the line. :D
