Front end noise

Great... I hear a noise from the front end. Seems like only when turning to the right. Of course it does not do it all the time. You'll hear it a few times then nothing for quite a while. It does not appear to be the wheel as it it not speed related. It does not appear to be the strut as it is not consistent with the front end vertical travel. All joints appear to be tight.

RE: Front end noise

I was experiencing a sound in the front end this week that sounded like a possible ball joint and stopped at a front end shop quick to analyze it as I replaced my uppers about 20,000 miles ago. Car now has 100,000. The old guy came out and listened, and told me to take it up to the quick lube and have the power steering fluid flushed out. As I was on the road for a couple of days and had some time I did. I felt maybe I was being pretty gullable, but this noise really bugged me, and I wasn't gpoing to wait until I got home. Anyway, they flushed it out and added new Mercon ATF and the noise is long gone. Go figure.

RE: Front end noise

Sigh{of relief}... :)

My noise went away and I quit looking. I had the car up on stands this past weekend and noticed no suspension issues. But I did notice what may be a power steering leak? I've been planning to have the power steering flushed - now I have a good reason. Thanks for the post.

RE: Front end noise

In regards to the leak, my friends MarkVll had a significant power steering leak and he used a fluid that sealed the leak up and it has been fine ever since. I can't remember the name off the top of my head now, but I remember it is a ell known name available at the auto parts store. I think they formulate it with a lot of teflon so as to stop the leak. When I see him today I will get the name and pass it on.

RE: Front end noise

I was at Advance Auto last night and they must have had a dozen different brands. Half of 'em with some type of 'stop leak' claim. Let me know what you find out. After all I've got a Mark VII too!

RE: Front end noise

It is made by Lucas Oil. The best part is that it is gauranteed to stop the leak. My friend actually got a second can for free because his was leaking so bad. It did stop the leak on the second can. I wiukd definetly give it a go if my started to leak.

RE: Front end noise

I had a front end noise when I was on the expressway coming from the drivers side wheel. It also made a knock when ever I went from drive to reverse and vice versa - I was worried that it was a ball joint or a control arm or something. Turned out to be the tie-rod and it was easy enough to do myself. I didn't even need an alignemnt.

RE: Front end noise

Well, I'll have to give the Lucas Oil Power Steering Stop Leak a try. It looked like either the hose(s) at the pump or steering rack were the leaky culprit as the resevoir and upper hoses were dry. However the power steering resevoir is a little lower than I remember it being before.

RE: Front end noise

You know, with the sensor lowering done to the Mark VIII I think either bumper on the PowerStroke would clear the hood no problem! }(

I would need a running start to run over the Mark VII though! LOL! ;)

RE: Front end noise

Today was the day.

The intermittent squeak and noises from the front end had been bugging me immensely, even though my car has been garaged most of the winter so far. With a break in the weather, I had made an appointment at the local 'Meineke' shop. The owner, Tom, is a very good tech and knows my car. Earlier in the week I had stopped by and described my concerns and he agreed to have all the parts on hand for the worst case scenario.

One lower ball joint and two upper conrol arms later, he called with the news. ;( We agreed to replace the remaining ball joint as well. Seven hours later(three hours after closing), surgery was completed. When I arrived they were finishing cursing the left upper control arm. I got to watch the last hour and a half and observe the four wheel alignment. I'm not sure his crew was happy with the OT, but they obliged with top notch work. After all was said and done, Tom took the '93 for a road test and returned with a broad smile. :D

I returned home after a spirited test drive(an hour later), feeling good, albeit poorer. :7
