hi i got a 1990 lincoln town car, and iv been having a problem, ill be driving and my battery will loose power and eventually turn off as im driving this happended about 3 times already, when the car stauls the fuel pump will not turn back on, BUT my headlights work... its eaither the battery because when it dies i bring the car to my house and hook it to a battery charger, and by the next day the fuelpump will turn on and it will be running, but it also could just be cooling down over night and working the next morning? i thought it was the alternator but i had the car running then took the positive off the battery and it was still running, could it be the fuel pump relay? i have no idea at this point???

RE: Fuel-Pump turning off

go to autozone, they should be able to run a charging system test for free. If that is all fine, then it's probably the fuel pump.

They can't test the CHARGING system??? ::wtf::

You can check it yourself with a good DVM(Digital VoltMeter).

Here's what you need to know...

1. Engine off - battery standing voltage.
With the engine off and fully charged battery, hook up the meter directly to the battery terminals(not clamp, bolt, nut, etc...). Read the meter as volts DC.

2. Engine running - lo idle - no load charging voltage.
Engine running at idle, all lights, accessories and AC OFF. Read the meter after voltage stabilizes from starting engine.

3. Engine running - hi idle - no load charging voltage.
Engine running at 1500 RPM, all lights, accessories and AC OFF. Read the meter.

4. Engine running - full load charging voltage.
Engine running at 2000 RPM, lights on high beams, AC on MAX(blower on high), ALL lights and accessories ON. Read the meter.

These readings give a good indication of the charging system.
