RE: G D computer pop up ads

I've found the combination of AdAware and SpyBot works well.

Are you getting pop-ups even when you're here on this site? Then you've got adware and/or spyware installed on your computer. This site doesn't use popups at all. If you do have adware, don't bother trying one of those pop-up blocker programs. All they do (if they even work) is mask the problem.

Get yourself BOTH Ad-aware and Spybot Search & Destroy. They're both free.

Ad-Aware:
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/support/download/

Just click one of the links under "Ad-Aware Standard Edition".

Spybot Search & Destroy:
http://www.safer-networking.org/index.php?lang=en&page=download

Use any of the download buttons at the bottom of the screen.

Also, if you use any so-called "freeware" programs like Kazaa, these programs will likely make them inoperative. That's because "freeware" usually comes with spyware/adware built in (so they can supposedly get their costs back). They usually won't work without the spyware running all the time. If you can't live without the programs and are unwilling to pay for them, you'll just have to deal with the popups and the knowledge that everything you do is being tracked by some dirtbag marketing company. In the case of Kazaa, I believe the "Kazaa Lite" doesn't contain spyware, so you may have to step down to that.

One more thing. If you ever get a popup like the one below...

http://home.att.net/~mtdarrah/warning2.jpg

NEVER EVER EVER NEVER EVER NEVER EVER EVER NEVER EVER click YES!!!!!!!!!!!! Those popups look like the prompt you get when you need to install a plugin for your browser, but it's NOT! Once you click Yes, you just gave them permission to install their POS software on your computer. Look where it says "Total Velocity". That's the scumbag company that's trying to talk you into letting them install their crap on your PC. Gator is another one. I honestly and truly wish God himself would strike these people down in the most severe and horrific manner. I would get great pleasure watching them burned alive in front of their children.

Whew. Sorry about that. ;-) But those companies, especially Gator, just make me want to go postal.

In any case, run both of the programs above, and they'll remove anything those dirtbags have installed.

RE: G D computer pop up ads

I guess Im fortunate, or just plain uninformed. I do not
get any "pop-ups" while on line, ever.

I have nothing installed except a free viris protection
which works very well.
The only time I get a "popup" is when Im looking a kkb or
something like that, and then an insurance thing or finanacing
operation comes up.
Am I just lucky of what? :0-

RE: G D computer pop up ads

OK. I got the Ad Aware 6.0 and the Spybot. The spybot appeared to extract the most files.

If that doesn't work, I guess I'll have to get a firewall.

Thanks, guys!!!!

RE: G D computer pop up ads

I have been using BlackIce Defender since I first got my computer and have never had pop-ups... Until recently when I updated my software and apparently BlackIce wants me to buy a new version. It crashed my computer to the point where the only way to use it was to delete the program entirely.

Since then, I have been getting an average of 30 pop-ups a day. Maybe its just a coincidence as I am not the only one using this computer and perhaps one of the other users downloaded something that allowed pop-ups. But, I will buy a new version of BlackIce Defender soon. I'll post again if it helps.

RE: G D computer pop up ads

Ad Aware and spybot didn't work. Got a program from download.com that is free for 30 days. After that, it's $20. If this works, I'll pay the $20.

RE: G D computer pop up ads

Sorry it took so long to respond. It took me a few days to find it after it was moved.

I'm using "IEJet-Popup Killer & Ad Stopper Ver 1.43". I got it from downloads.com. Not a cure-all because I can't get into my ISP email directly, I have to go through Outlook Express. A small price to pay, since 100 popups at a time was not unusual.

RE: G D computer pop up ads

I've been using Netscape 7.1 for a few weeks now, and it has a built in pop up blocker and appears to work quite well. But make sure you go into "allowed sites" and remove all the sites they have in their list or you'll get pop ups when you visit those. Ad ware does not hurt either.

What do you mean you can't get into your ISP mail directly? Do they make you use a proxy server or something? Who's your ISP?

Also, were you getting popups when coming to THIS site? Did you get popups when you're not even on the internet? If you answered yes to either of those questions, then all that popup stopper is doing is applying a band-aid to a much more serious problem. You've got adware and/or spyware running on your system, and it needs to be removed! Even if you don't care if some scumbag marketing company knows everything you're doing on your PC, you should know that their programs use up resources on your machine, making it run slower. Popup stoppers are only good AFTER you're sure you've got no other issues with your machine. It's like pouring a can of that thick oil treatment crap into your engine in order to stop it from rattling. It may quiet the noise, but it doesn't do anything about the fact that your engine is on its last leg.

I don't mean to drag this out, but the symptoms you describe just don't sound right. I use ZoneAlarm Pro as a firewall and to kill popups, and it works fine. But even when I disable it, popups are not that bad. Some pages might spawn three or four, but that's the most. I NEVER get popups here at this site. If you're getting "hundreds", then you've still got problems that need to be fixed.

RE: G D computer pop up ads

I think I finally turned them off for no cost but a thank you to GRAND_LS400.

Mark. To answer your question, "no", I don't get pup up ads on LOD, but I was having a problem with the "Messenger" ads, not the pop ups that you mean.

I followed GRAND_LS 400'S advice and it turned off the same switch that the download did, so I looking forward to no more messengers.
