Gear noise...how much is to much, if any at all?

For those of you reading this that don't know, I have 4.10's in my car...much more fun than the stock 3.08's....but man, where did my gas mileage go? (not that bad still getting 380 miles to a tank on trips where I'm not in the loud pedal constantly)

Ok, so this weekend I went to Earlville, IA (about 20 minutes west of Dubuque) for the Iowa GTP club vs. Iowa SC club clash. On the way there we descided to have some fun (on the way back too, but the trip there is what got me concerend). On the way down since there was little to no traffic we descided to see what the cars had in them. At about 100, I start to hear reverberation from the gears...110 there is a fairly constant drone, but I can still hear my exhaust....120 it's no longer reverberation but a constant wir, can still hear exhaust...by 130 you can't even hear the exhaust anymore from inside the car and when I blew past the Thunderbird that was following me down (He made a blast past me first so I had a little catching up to do }( ) he said he wasn't sure if the gears or the exhaust was louder....this has me slightly concerned, but maybe it's normal for such a steep gear ratio? Could this be due to the poly diff mounts and a shot rear diff isolator (the nifty ruber mount on the back of the case)? I have plans to upgrade that rather soon thank goodness.

Not that I'd usually condone this type of activity, but I like to find problems in my car before I start doing things to make it go faster....and I just want to make sure this isn't going to cause any future problems. I probably would have run it up higher, but the noise did concern me.

Did you change the driveshaft to a metal matrix shaft?

Yeah, my car shook way bad before I did even the gear change. Couldn't drive the car over 80 for very long.

My only experience with 4.11 gears is my 59 Cheverolet Impala. (1963) It had a 3 speed on the column with electric overdrive. The stock rear for that combination was a 4.11 gear ratio. It had a 283 230hp engine and it would run 115 mph anytime and 120 on a good day. I never heard any noise out of that rear. I think there is "something" wrong with that much noise. However, I think I remember Geno saying that the 4.10 gears in a Mark did make a little noise.

between wind, etc. i can't really hear my exhaust at 120+. I can't hear my gears, though, either.

I get some whine at a few certain speeds (45-55 mph) but it goes away if i go faster.

No whine on that 140+ run in Cinci last year either ... 4.10s + Denny's MMX

RE: Gear noise...how much is to much, if any at all?

My 4.10s and MMx driveshaft combo doesn't whine AFAIK, though triple digit speeds is a rarity where I'm at.

FWIW, I was very concerned with such prospects when I first built up the 4.10 center section. I meticulously set the preloads and backlash not only to specs but 'prefferred specifications' with allowances for new bearings in the install. Upon the install, I immediately drove the car between buildings at our facility, straining to hear any tell tale whine. I have not experienced such in an automobile but I know the whine you are describing from experience with trucks and heavy equipment - it can be quite pronounced and a definite concern for longevity.

Is it something to worry about then? I know nothing about rear ends except that lockers are great for drag racing, Limited slip (sorry for the GM term) is great for everything else (even drag racing in the right cars) and open diff's just plain suck.

I suppose the differential mounts and isolator contribute, but it is difficult to say whether it is something to worry about. If you do not have any noticeable whine during normal driving, it is probably of no immediate major concern. I've seen noisy gearsets go seemingly forever and others fail in a short time. I would monitor the frequency and intensity change as well as occasionally checking the fluid for abnormalities. Regular lab tests on the gear oil is the best impartial judge.
