Gen 1 vs. Gen 2 radiator

Someone suggested to change the radiator after a tranny failure due to contaminants in the system. They said that the later model radiators have a plate style tranny cooler which is superior to the tube style of the earlier models. My question is can the newer ones be used in '93 model? Are all the hook-ups compatible?

I would venture to say that what they were telling you was to add a plate style tranny cooler (is a B&M from Summit) to augment your radiator's cooling capability by either bypassinbg it all to gether or putting it in series.

Do NOT use the radiator as a transmission cooler. It is worthless. You should just route the transmission lines through an external (non radiator) transmission cooler.

Up in the snow belt I prefer to get the tranny fluid warmed up a little sooner by using the in line method.

I think what he is saying is that the radiator failed and leaked coolant into the trans fluid lines. I don’t about the compatibility with the 1st gen and 2nd gen. I would guess to say they are the same but just call up a dealer parts department and they can tell you.

No, I meant that when the tranny fails, it clogs the tranny cooler in the radiator with clutch residue, which can't be totally cleaned out, making it advisable to replace the radiator when rebuilding or replacing the tranny so as not to contaminate the new fluid and shorten the life of the new tranny. That's how it was explained to me.

happens both ways.. tranny fails and contaminates the radiators internal cooler..

AND the internal cooler leaks and puts coolant into the tranny fluid..which is VERY VERY BAD.

Either way, the best solution is to replace the radiator...

Keep your radiator and buy a separate plate cooler for the transmission. Plug off the transmission line ports on your radiator. Run the plate cooler independently on the transmission lines. Without the added heat of the hot transmission fluid, your existing radiator will function much more efficiently than a new one with the hot transmission fluid.
