SOMEBODY PLEASE HELP ME!!!

After getting in an accident with my '93 Mark VIII (I loved that car so much, blue leather interior and blue exterior) I recently bought a '98 Mark VIII LSC from a private seller. I'm still deciding whether or not it's a lemon, or just having problems as a coincidence.

The day after I got the car, I'm driving along, and lose power steering. I pull over, and the serpentine belt is somewhat shredded up. No big deal, bought another one at Advance Auto Parts and put it on. That same day, I get on the road, and the message center displays a message something like... "Engine Sensor Error" or something to that effect. So I start looking for a place to pull over on the highway. Before I get a chance to find a decent spot, the engine starts to overheat and I hear a slight rattling sound when I press on the accelerator. Then the engine shuts off. I think the automatic over-heat shutoff kicked in. I get over, pop the hood, and there's a little bit of smoke and a slight burning smell. ####.

I let if cool off for about 30 minutes and manage to get it to an Advance Auto Parts parking lot, where I park it for the night. The next day I go back to the store after it opens and ask them to plug in their little computer analyzer thing. The store employee gets the printout and it says:

Set DTCs (Codes)

DTC P0117
Engine Coolant Temp
Circuit Low Input

The guy there says it probably is the Temperature Switch/Sender that needs replacing, but they don't have one. Great. I manage to get the car home just before the temp gets to the red zone. I popped the hood to look things over and notice that coolant is coming OUT of the dump tank. Great, another problem. The next day, after talking with some mechanic friends and what they thought of it, I borrowed a friends car and bought a new thermostat and put that in. I turned the car on and let it sit for about 20-25 minutes. Shortly after the temp gauge gets up to Normal, the coolant starts to flow out of the dump tank again (I had refilled the coolant back to cold level before I started that car). So I figure, OK, maybe it's the water pump. Next day I went out and bought a new water pump and put that in. Same problem. Coolant flows OUT of the dump tank after about 10 minutes of warming up and 5 minutes of driving around the block. So I called around and finally found that temperature switch/sender at a NAPA, put that in the next day, and am STILL having coolant flow out of the dump tank after a short test drive.

Somebody told me that it might be the head gaskets, but I figure (and really really hope) that it's not because of the fact that I don't have any coolant in my oil, there's no oil in my coolant, and I don't smell any coolant in the exhaust. I can't figure it out and am getting extremely frustrated now, because I just bought this car! Can somebody please help me?

Appreciate the help that anyone can give me...

P.S. The engine fan does work and comes on.

You probably have air in the cooling system. You should have a sticker on the driver side fender under the hood that tells you that you MUST fill the cooling system from the plug on the crossover tube, right by the alternator, and not at the reservoir, to remove the air. The overflow reservoir is not the highest point of the cooling system - that's why you fill it at the crossover tube. Later topping off can be at the reservoir. If the car first became overheated after throwing the belt, and you only filled it from the reservoir, you have air in the system - plain and simple, especially if that's how you kept refilling the system after each maintenance.

The crossover tube plug takes a 1/4" square drive, like a small ratchet. Let the car cool down completely, remove that plug, then fill the system from there. Once it appears full, start the engine, then keep adding coolant at the crossover tube while the engine warms up. Once it's fully warmed up and the coolant stays to the top of the crossover tube, put the plug back in. Monitor the level at the reservoir after that.

Turn on the heat and fan all the way as well and make sure there is not a problem with the heater core.

noise doesn't sound good when it does that. with an aluminum block and heads it's not very hard to warp 'em when overheating. it probably shut off before getting that far, though.

water pump was probably bad. now it's probably a bubble in the system. with the car cold, remove the cap on the crossover tube. fill the system from there, then start the car with it open. keep it full at the crossover tube. wait until the thermostat opens, then make sure it's still full at the tube and put the cap back on.

I'd bet on a clogged system.

When I bought my 96 a few months ago, it ran hot. I emptied the coolant, put in Prestone flush with water, and ran it like a dog on the freeway for about 5 miles in 2nd gear. And the heater on of course. The car immediately ran cooler even before I emptied the flush fluid out.

The flush dropped me about 15 degrees.

Exactly what I went thru last night....It was low on coolant but wouldn't take it at the resovoir....follow those steps at the crossover tube fill and it will take care of the air in the system problem.....Took 5 minutes once I figured it out.

Sequence of events:

If you shreaded the serpentine belt, probably something (maybe water pump bearing?) has excessive friction. After it shreaded, the engine got hot since it shut down. When it got hot, it blew steam out the dump tank. When the engine cooled off, it sucked in the remaining coolant in the dump tank, but there wasn't enough to completely fill back up the engine. Voila.. you have an air pocket in the top of your engine (up at the heads/crossover tube). Next time you start it up, all is well for a few minutes, but since you have the air pocket, water is NOT circulating freely through the engine. The engine overheats again.

You must always refill the coolant from the crossover tube anytime the engine overheats enough to empty out the dump tank.
