An 8.8 IRS traction lock is different than a solid axle 8.8 traction lock therefore they are NOT interchangeable. Please vote above and post your opinion.

Both...
They are little different but they're interchangeable .If you're using t-lock from SA on IRS you'll have a hard time to pull the axles back out later other than that it's fine. Fastest Mark VIII on this forum is running t-lock out of SA :D.

Thanks for clearing that up. I'm getting ready to buy a TL and 3.73's from a solid axle mustang and then I just read on supercoupe performance that the SA and IRS isn't interchangeable, but I'm pretty sure it's just a marketing lie. :D

Its not a marketing lie, its called covering his a$$. Basically he puts that on there so people don't mess up their diffs and than blame him for their "modifications" by using the SA diff in a IRS housing.

So then what's the actual difference? Is it 130 bucks different? I'm gonna get one soon and I wanna make sure it's right.

basicley the side spider gears that the axle shafts are splined into have a bevel on them on the IRS diffs and the SA ones do not. if you have even seen the diff side splined end of any CV axle you will notice that there is a little metal ring setting in a grove on the axle. the bevel on the side gears in the IRS diff helps the ring to compress when you try to take the axle out of the housing. the SA axle shafts do not have this clip on the end and there fore do not need the bevel on the gears.

basically what im saying is the CV shafts will be harder to pull out of the SA diff than they will be to get out of a IRS diff. some guys will have the side gears on the SA "locker" machined to it will be easer to get the axles out when they need to come out. other guys will just yank and beat and break stuff untill they come out because they dont know why they are so hard to get out because they dont ask this question and dont know any better.

im sure your next question is will the side gears out of my stock IRS open diff fit in my new SA posi unit. im not 100% sure on this but im about 90% sure that the open diff and the posi diff have different side gears and will not interchange.

yes unless you have the gears machine. the machine work should not cost that much cuz there is not much that needs to be taken off of the gears all they do is basicley knock the corner off so its a bit of a taper.

Just remove the little clip from the end of the half-shaft and you will be fine.
