IPOD interface

I'm not sure if this is old news or not...but it is new to me and I love it.

In wanting to keep the stock appearance of my Mark I have been discussing with my local stereo shop how I can interface my Ipod into the stock head unit...well today we did it. It was basically plug and play.

He found a company 'PIE' (Precision Interface Electronics) that makes an adapter to tap into the CD changer input in the back of the head unit to interface an aux source (ipod)

So, we plugged this adapter (pn FRDF-AUX) in the back of the head unit, then plugged another PIE adapter (pn AV-iPD) into the two RCA jacks from the 1st adapter and tapped into an aux power source to make it complete.

So, now I have a wire coming out from underneath my console that I can just plug my Ipod into. I push the 'CD' button on the head unit and the Ipod becomes active..and it charges the Ipod too.

The screen just reads CD 1 Track 1 perpetually.

The sound is great! No more FM receivers or those tape adapters....and everything can be just tucked away.

It is easily reverse-able and the CD changer plugged right back into the rear of the head unit.

All that to say is that i'm pleased and thought i'd share.

The two adapters were approx $80.00 a piece.

I'm sure I could have gotten them cheaper, but this is a local business and he spent some significant time figuring this out, so I was willing to pay him for it.

I made this very adapter just last week, the aux in using cd changer input. The cost was negligible, just some soldering and piece of wire with a mini jack plug from old headphones.

Yea, I could have opted to install a adapter that just had a mini jack plug, but I opted to install the one that plugged into the larger plug on the ipod so that I can charge it.

But, with the mini-plug you can then plug in any type of audio input.

I did both in my Mazda. iPod dock connector and 3.5mm plug. :D

Thanks for posting this Doug. I didn't know this would be so simple.

In my case, I have an ipod, so the docking connector is perfect. No need for the extra headphone plug. By the way, you can go with with the RCA-iPD instead of the AV-iPD and save ten bucks. The AV has an additional video output which most of us don't need. The RCA only has audio outputs.

The cheapest I could find were:

RCA-iPD $46.99
FRDF-AUX $47.50

Both are sold by different vendors BTW.

Now I have an excuse to get rid of that antiquated CD changer and free up a little space in the trunk.
