RE: Kooks Headers have arrived
Ok here is my newest update on my experience with Kooks Performance Headers .
There was a slight complication with the headers as the template for the 95 didn't include air injection which was on my car ,so fittings were not on headers ..Kooks modified the headers and fitted the air injection to them ,at no charge to me , and only a slight delay in delivery.
The exhaust system installed by them was first rate complete with separation flanges behind transmission , to drop only half the system ,either end , without dropping the whole thing..Nice touch..hangars were made , and first class..
I was surprised when I saw where the headers came down to , they end more than half way down the bell housing .They are longer than I anticipated ,the only length of header missing is the 90 deg bend and the length parallel with the street..They are longer than shorties , truly 3/4 length.
I had some discussion with them regarding long tubes . Their opinion is , that in todays cars requiring cats , they sell , I believe they said , 9 out of 10 , 3/4 length .Most people today want to try and keep their street rods as hassle proof as possible, and the difference in power gain is small..Long tubes make it extremely difficult to mount cats and balance tubes before the mufflers ,in most cars , whether the mufflers are in the middle or the rear , there just isn't very much room..
It is very difficult for me to appraise the performance ,as loud exhaust always makes the car feel faster ..I will say this , the car car feels much more responsive after 3k RPM . I will give more of an opinion when I get it quieted down a little. Many of you would love the sound , its sounds like a big block fueler , accelerating after 3K RPM , and just about as loud..I only have the Magnaflow "X" muffler and straight pipes out the rear..
Remember this car is totally virgin , a chip mod is very much needed , as shift points are very sloppy ,and at the wrong RPM.Also car runs much leaner now on the analyzer, actually tripped the O2s when it was cold and and I first picked up ..I have cleared codes and they have not come back , probably because the ECU has retaught itself to run richer . These mods are weeks away and I will report as I go along..
