Limited slip

A few questions.

The mark takes an 8.8in 28 spline?

Is a limited slip/traction lok the same thing?

What kind of difference does the car typically have with one of these units?

And last but not least, I'm assuming that this is much stronger than the factory open differential?

Yes, 8.8.

Not limited slip. Trac-lok is just the Ford name for it....kinda like Chevy and Posi.

Better traction in rain, better acceleration off the line, and much better handling/oversteer characteristics.

I wouldn't say its stronger, per say, but its definitally better! :D

+1...but stay away from the Eaton posis. They were meant for trucks and are annoying in Marks. I've got one in my Mark that I will be switching out in the future.

Ford Traction Loks are the way to go for the average enthusiast.

+1 for T/L's! You can get one for $200 bucks plus $90 for the bearing kit (aka install kit) and for under 400 bucks you can get sideways FOR REAL! :cool-blue:

Max got the one I installed at www.RockAuto.com, at a better price than the one I bought for my car WITH my shop discount!! Remember to use "our" discount code, you'll have to do a search to find it on here.

Ford's traction-lok is a limited-slip clutch type differential. I prefer a gear type limited-slip differential such as the Detroit Tru-Trac. The traction-lok is fine for street use and limited track use, but if you're looking for severe duty, get a gear type differential.

You could always shop craigslist for one. I got a rebuilt one for $50. Just be careful on what you buy. Luckily i have a cousin who rebuilds rear ends and he was able to inspect it for me to make sure i was getting a good deal. Where can i get bearings for $90?

My cousins shop buys from them all the time. Maybe he can get me a deal from them. Thanks J

Oooo..there you go! If you're gonna do a trak-lok, you might as well throw in some gears. No extra labor!

No problem Jerm!

Oh, something else I just remembered to ask...

When I swap gears in a 98 does that require computer recalibration or new speedo gears?

Some claim both.

I only had a chip. And my speedo was accurate.

You need a chip to have correct shift points though.

My speedo was also accurate when I installed the 3.73's. The chip made all the differnce with the new shift points! I don't understand the need for a new speedo gear, but I have read others say you need it.

As far as I know, its ONLY a chip, and ONLY if the chip fixes the shift schedules with the new gears. I don't think a "speed calibrator" would actually work appropriately.

Also, on Gen 2's, the speed is read from the front ABS sensor(s) NOT the transmission, but thats why you need a chip.
