My turn for Trans trouble?

I changed the trans fluid in the 98 a couple of weeks ago. I don't know the history of it and it's got 109 k miles on it so I just did a pan drop and filter change.

Call me old fashioned, but I didn't want to "shock" the trans with all new fluid. I didn't drain the torque converter.

I found the "golf tee" plug in the pan, so I know the pan hasn't been dropped before. Maybe it was flushed, I don't know.

The trans has been running fine so far, except for a leak at the dipstick tube O ring.

I bought a set of O rings today and of course, the set didn't have the right size.

I looked at that "golf tee" plug, at the O ring on it. I thought, no way would that be the right size.

It was the right size!:D

I figured I'd give it a try, since I didn't have the right one anyway, If I have to replace it, at least I have the old one to match up now.:)

I simply went to the L/M dealer and bought a new "o" ring! LOL

Bill - you're old fashioned. :p

Don't tell me you put in Mercon V with who knows what?!

Curious, did you buy a metric 'o'-ring kit?

If this fluid was never changed before, it should have had the Mercon V from the factory (98).

I did the same thing with my green Mark. It had about 175k miles on the trans and I didn't know the history. In that car, I used Mercon III in that case.

I changed all the fliud in my red Mark with Mercon V. Very shortly after that, it started losing forward gears, and it never had problems with that before. It did have reverse problems sometimes, but no problems at all with forward.

The fluid in the 98 looks clean now, if everything works ok, I'll change it all next year.

Lets see, 2 transmissions with half changed fluid still running fine. One complete fluid change, trans dead and replaced.

I know people say it was going to go anyway but, why force the issue?:D

Oh yeah, the O ring kit is metric.

If it works, that's all that matters. ;)

I found both standard and metric "o"-rings in my '93, so I have bought two kits.

Bill....its NOT a "golf tee" its a CHERRY! The reason that o-ring is the same size is because thats whats in the dipstick hole at the manufacturer! When the install the dipstick tube it "pops" the cherry and it drops into the pan. With 100K miles and a cherry in the pan you're probably destined for failure, good thing you didn't do a complete fluid change. If you do eventually drain the converter, I recommend adding a tube of friction modifier.
