Navigator in the sand dunes

Here are some pics from my trip to Silver Lake this weekend. The Navigator did pretty well in the dunes, the power really helped getting up some of those hills. Of course i was running about 12 psi in the tires so it didn't sink. Getting the hills up was easy, coming down was the scary part. The down sides were steeper, damn near vertical in some places. The kind of hill where you hit the gas to go down so that the back of the truck doesn't come over the front.

without further ado:

navigator: not much flex

This pic was taken at the top of "test hill". This is the highest hill out there. Easier than normal to get up when we were out there, but still fun. About 140 feet high, per the GPS.

here's some turbo buggy action. There were half a dozen of these out there, some turbo, some not. All stupid fast. For a while they just kept coming up this one hill and jumping with a lot of spectators. I have a bunch of pics of them airborne.

And some shots of our lovely drunk tent. It worked pretty well. We needed somewhere to get out of the rain and drink, and luckily Ted brought a tarp. The flag poles made decent tent posts, as well.

I have a whole bunch more pics, i may post some more good ones later.

RE: Navigator in the sand dunes

Cool stuff, those buggies are crazy, that one must have like 8 feet of air there. Does the Navi have locking differencials? Pretty crazy to see a Lux Suv going through some sand.

RE: Navigator in the sand dunes

The 'gator has a traction lock rear, and the center will lock up.

Really, you could take damn near anything out there if you lower the tire pressure enough. 4x4 helps, though.

I was certainly the only Navigator out there, and I didn't see any Escalades out there either. But aside from the risk of rolling it if you get crossed up coming down a hill, it's not really too tough on the truck. Unless some whoops sneak up on you. I though the bumper hit the ground a few times, those whoops will really screw you.

here are a couple more pics

Sticker power!

A nice shot of the lake, showing how steep some of the hills are. I believe this was from the top of test hill, but the slope in the foreground is misleading as it's at the top of the hill where it was somewhat rounded off already. It was steeper coming up, and much steeper going down.

RE: Navigator in the sand dunes

BTW my truck was completely filthy in all those pictures. Those represent a week of rain, followed by 1500 miles on the highway over 3 days, with no chance to wash it.

I hope the sand cleaned some of the mud off the undercarriage from the last time i took it off road, back in February.

RE: Navigator in the sand dunes

Awesome pics man! I was thinking about doing the same thing with my Jeep. But I was scared that the sand was going to mess with the drivetrain. People were probably like WTF is this nice navi doing up there?! :7
