Need to do something about my paint!

The finish of the paint on my 96 black Mark is getting pretty bad. I've attempted to address the issue in the past using a clay bar followed by turtle wax, but the problem seems to be deeper. The finish still has some mottled areas and some discoloration due to age. I don't know much about this stuff. Do I need to buff it, or sand it, or both? If so, what materials do I use? Will using a high end wax like Zaino fix it?

Thanks for the help.

Does it look something like water spots? Not always even but something snowflakeish (sorry that’s my best description).

It sounds to me that the black is oxidizing under the clear coat and as far as I know that means repaint.

I think your cars paint has pretty much lived through its useful life. Without seeing pictures it is hard to say what you need to do. Most polishing processes involve removing a layer of the clearcoat... In your case that layer may be too thin.

sometimes if it isnt gotten into the paint yet, you can have a body shop wet sand the clear coat off and get it down to your black base coat, then reclear the entire car and it will look great, but with these lincolns and their factory black paint, most likely you are one of the many who's factory black paint has seen its day, and will need a repaint. once there is damage to the clearcoat as it sounds like on your car, there is no easy fix anymore, you can polish, wax and wash all you want, its only going to get worse. if you like the car and plan to keep it, start shopping for quotes on a quality paint job, stay away from maaco, specially for black paint, i know maaco can do a decent job, but i would only use them if i was trying to unload a car quickly, if you want to keep it, spend more money and have it done right one time!
