New Guy with a question

BIG ROLLER

formerly K.B.R.
Hey there,
I have a '93 MARK 8 that I would like to put a removable stearing wheel in.
Has anyone here put one in before?
The reason why I am asking is because I am in a wheelchair and it is a little diffacult for me to get in with the stearing wheel there.I also have a hand control to drive that is also in the way but I can move it.
I looked at GRANT and MOMO stearing wheels but they only have handle covers.
I was thinking about fabbing up a hub for it but thought I would ask here before I going that route.

I don’t know about a removable steering wheel, but my guess is you won’t be able to have an air bag. I don’t know the rules or the laws about that but I don’t think my insurance company here in NJ would cover me if I got hurt if I disabled the air bag.

In my 97 the steering wheel moves in and up and the seat back with the easy entry feature. Not sure if that would help or not in your situation or if you are using it.

Lots of race cars have removable steering wheels. I'd look for a speed shop. ;)

Welcome! :)

There is a company in Pasadena Texas {outside houston} that does this kind of conversions...

If I remember correctly they are called "Adaptive Controls".

Thanks for your help guys and thanks for the welcome.I have been through the site before and like the knowledge here about the LINCOLN MARK series.

XLRVIII,I think I found the place you were talking about,ADAPTIVE DRIVING ACCESS.
I have the hand controls already but thanks for your help.

Did you inquire with them about such a removable wheel?

I really dont know if you can have a removable air bag steering wheel.

hard to say if any company is going to offer such a kit, due to liability and danger of removing the air bag.

I'm going to talk to one of my buddies at the track he uses hand controls in his drag car.
I'll see if he's got any input...I know two different guys using hand controls in track cars...one of them has to know "sumthin".

question, is retention of the stock air bag required absolutely?
if so, the search would probably end pretty quickly.

I'll see what I can find out.

would a "captains chair mount" be a viable solution?

mid 70's monte carlos had those "swing out seats".

one of the adaptive access pages had a similar type set up.

sorry to stray from the topic {well sorta)

but this page on that site really caught my eye!

Ya,there are no companys thar make a removable steering wheel with the air bag.GRANT(http://www.grantproducts.com) does make them where you can replace the RIM but not the whole thing.
Retaining the stock air bag is required but I think I can get by without it do to my situation.

I sure would hate to have kids in the car when you have to yell STOP doing something.LOL

Competely off topic. The last couple of times when I get done typeing up my post and click on the "reply" button it says that I am logged off and wont let me continue. So I have to log back in and start over. The funny thing is that on top it says "log off" as if there is no problem.Just wondering if this happens to anybody else here and if I can do about it?

Make sure when you log on that you check the box that says "remember me" or something like that. That sets a cookie in the browser that will 'keep you logged on'.

Driller,
Thanks.

Also,I think I found my answer about removing the air bag and if there would be any legal problems.I will look into it a little more but it looks pretty good.
I will keep in touch and follow the forum for anything else that can help.

THANKS.
