Newbie has a different driveshaft question.

Hi guys, I'm new to this board and to the Mark VIII performance world. I just got a 1994, and I LOVE it. Can't wait to mod the heck out of it!

My question is; I want to install 4:10 gears and a posi carrier. I have read about the vibration issues from the drive shaft. I can not afford to spend $500 or $600 on a new performance shaft right now. The gears and carrier are enough money...lol. I called a local drive shaft specialty shop here on Long Island, and they told me to get a shaft from a 1993 Mark VIII and they will install high performance U-joints and speed balance it. Will this shaft bolt in without modifications? Also, do you think that this will work? The tech's at the drive shaft shop seem to think so. I told them that I am installing 4:10's and a stall converter.

Your opinions would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance!

It bolts right in...I have a 97 with a 2 piece and I installed a 93 which is a 1 piece. No problem. Only took about an hour. Oh yeah, be sure to check out the install hints in for the drop/install. You don't have to completely drop the gas tank and exhaust.

RE: Newbie has a different driveshaft question.

How much are you going to spend on purchasing a 93 shaft and having all the work done? You may get lucky and the 93 might work. If it still vibrates, you are out the money. Perhaps you should consider leaving the shaft you have in the car and not driving it too fast until you can afford the new correct shaft that will work for sure. I would just hate to see you go out and spend a couple hundred bucks on something that does not work, then have to turn around and still spend the five hundred. If that happens, you will wish you had just kept the old shaft in and saved for the correct one. If you go with the 93 route and it works, you will be even more happy as you will have saved a bunch of cash that can go towards other mods.

If quizzes are quizzical, what are tests?

Very good point. I think I found a 1993 drive shaft for $50.00. The drive shaft shop wants $100 to replace the u-joints and balance it. So, I guess it's a $150 gamble. I think I'm going to give it a shot, $500 for a drive shaft is a little steep. My car dosen't vibrate until 100 MPH with the stock gears. I would love to put that $500 into a juice kit!!!
