Me again with the new 64-bit system.

Got Windows installed, but it keeps randomly rebooting on me. I checked the BIOS, and apparently my CPU is running at 60C at idle. I checked AMD's site and they say idle temp should be 40C, max temp 70C. I have used two different pastes and two different cooling fans with no difference. I've heard that the temp sensor can report the wrong temp, but I assume mine is reporting correctly in light of the rebooting. Assuming the paste and cooling fan are fine, can I assume a faulty CPU?

Thanks for any help.

RE: Next problem

Well I doubt if your proc is bad since it is working... like troubleshooting a problem with your ride the more discriptive details provided the better the answers are. Would you provide chassis info, power supply data, MB info, what apps are running, how many fans etc. Could be poor chassis cooling, weak power supply, to much 'paste', are you running a 'burn in' program (benchmarking)?
BTW, I'm surprised that you could pull a drive from system A and plug it into system B and still boot:eek: Did you use NTFS this time? ya know it is a large performance boost.

It's a mid tower chassis, 400W power supply recommended by AMD, ECS KN1 Extreme MB, no apps running - reboots randomly, and one case fan. However I have been running the system with both side panels off and the power supply sitting on top of the chassis in order to troubleshoot; chassis colling is not the issue. I keep hearing "too much paste" from several people. I never gave that much thought. Exactly how much paste is one supposed to use? As thin a film as possible?

As for putting the drive in another computer, I put it in as a slave; all I wanted to do was move some data from it.

And though I agree that NTFS is the way to go, I really just want to get my system running before I go down that path.

RE: Next problem

Very hot MB which I had one!! - With a clean OS, latest service packs and security patches installed, in my opinion, random reboots are caused by – overheating (CPU), virus, or bad hardware. Yes as thin a film as possible – like two pinhead sized dabs max…

RE: Next problem

I'm going to buy an exact duplicate CPU tomorrow and see if that is the problem. I can always return it later.
