No start sometimes

So, I am planning on selling my beauty '95 and buying a 5.0 mustang to start winning some street races. The lincoln is just too expensive to maintain for a college guy. The air bags are really scaring my empty wallet. If I find another wrecked one I'll have to buy it though. But before selling, I want to fix the cam or crank sensor, whichever one is failing. Sometimes the car will crank and and crank but wont fire up. After letting it sit (ranges from 5 to 30 minutes) she'll start right up. I assume cam or crank sensor. I can hear the fuel pump so I don't think that's it. New plug wires and plugs and pretty sure alternator's good. What else could it be? And is there a way to tell which sensor is bad without changing both? Also, about how much and how to install the crank sensor? Any help would be great, thanks.

RE: No start sometimes

FWIW, I've known others tell just to simply disconnect the sensor(s) and then reconnect.

You need to remove the mounting bolts and shift the AC compressor to access the crank sensor. Do not disconnect the AC lines.

You need to unbolt the power steering reservoir and move aside to access the cam sensor. You do not need to disconnect the hoses. Inspect the harness plug very carefully as they have a history of an intermittent wire break.

The cam sensor is Standard Motor Products PC26 and lists for $17.99.

The crank sensor is Standard Motor Products PC18 and lists for $19.99.

RE: No start sometimes

Cam sensor is easier by far.
The crank sensor isn't "that bad" if you follow the directions posted above.

Tiffany changed her OWN crank sensor in a Oreilly's parking lot.
She had it changed before I could drive up to assist her.

How much you looking to sell that car for?
and.. what "have" you replaced and what do you "need" to replace?

RE: No start sometimes

Personally, I'd suggest DITCHING the Street Racing idea...

KEEP the Lincoln and go and enter into some "Jackpot Bracket Races" at a dragstrip near you.

Just this month.. Tiffany has WON 300.00 racing in our local area Jackpot race.

It's alot safer, and you dont have to fight to get paid.
It's easy.. make the WIN LIGHT COME ON..

RE: No start sometimes

Yea, I haven't really inspected the sensors. Sometimes you just need somebody to bring that stuff to your attention. ha. I am asking $4300 OBO. I have replaced plug wires, plugs, oil pan, water pump, tensioner, and belt. I also welded in a new section of rocker on the passenger side. It still has the factory separation line from the quarter panel so you can't tell its been blended. She runs great with just over 100,000 miles. I just cant afford those air bags to go on my time. I was thinking of buying a wrecked T-Bird and swapping over the suspension, but I dont have the time or the money right now. School is costing me a ton. And your right about fighting for your money at the races. Why is it always the pollacks that run off without paying? haha, just kidding. Yea, I dont want that car just to race on the street. I want the 5.0 mustang because it is cheap, pushrod power, that I can wrench on all day and not worry if I get the seats dirty. If you knew me, you'd know. When I get done working on the lincoln, I am so anal I have to take a shower and clean everything on the car! Everything! I wash that car probably 5 times a week, just water. She is real beautiful, just too expensive for an 18 year old kid that wants a car he can thrash around and not be scared to put a scratch on! I appreciate these cars way too much to hurt them. If I could find a 98 LSC black on black I would do it. I'll look in to the jackpot races though. I have never heard of them. Thanks for all the input guys. By the way, I also have a 65 Mustang coupe for sale. Planning on doing an engine swap, but unless I get to it before it sells.
