Hello all,I have just purchased a 94 mk8 and love it, but when i push the od button on the shifter the od does not turn off, but the car is in overdrive, any ideas as to what might cause this?

broken wire somewhere in the shifter, most likely.

Welcome!

Yep, sounds like a broken wire. A wire runs up the shifter shaft to the button. From the shaft it runs toward the rear of the car about a foot, to a harness plug-in under the armrest, as I recall.

Remove the center console/armrest to see if it's broke. Usually breaks about halfway, where it rubs against a bracket near the shifter/tranny mount. Unless someone tried removing the shifter without remembering there was a wire attached and broke it elsewhere in it's length.

The console is easier than it looks. Remove the plastic bezel above the shifter trim piece(around the heat/ac controls), just carefully pry up bottom side of bezel with a screwdriver, it pops out, remove two bolts (about 10 mm), remove the shifter trim piece(may have to move shifter handle down toward drive to get trim over shifter), remove more bolts here(two, three, or four can't remember exactly), under console lid in bottom is a rubber mat, under this a screw to remove from tranny hump. Except for maybe a harness disconnect, console will slide back and out now.

Should be able to see and follow shifter wire now. To remove shifter, if needed, there is a c-clip, about dime sized, in back of shifter shaft. Use a needle nose plier to pull it out toward dash. Shifter will slide off now. Undo other end of wire from harness and effect repairs, then reverse it all back together.

:) Thanks guys, just like you said, directly under the shifter someone broke the wires, now it works like a charm, thanks a million
